I loved how he played in the weekend series against the Barracuda. There are mistakes to be ironed out but he's good.

Thought he looked good. Nervous at first but was real solid by the end of the game. An upgrade on several options already.

He's played 5 games so far in the NHL and has looked NHL ready. Been very impressed with his game so far. So smart and efficient. Keeps the mistakes to a minimum and is great at making smart outlet passes under pressure. Hell be a top four guy very soon and a big piece in finally completing the Avs defensive core.

He's just lights out defensively. The Vlasic comparisons make more and more sense each game. Not saying he will ever get that good but he's been incredible for Colorado since getting called up.

Zach Redmond or Andrew Bodnarcuk. Recently it's been Bodnarchuk mostly as Redmond has been a healthy scratch.

I believe in the 18 games he's played now, he has only been on the ice for 1 ES goal against to this point.

I notice he is playing low minutes. What level of opposition is he facing? Which forwards is he on the ice with?

Roy is slowly acclimating him to more minutes and tougher comp. He's on the ice with all forwards, but lately he's started killing penalties and even being on the ice protecting a lead.

He's shown a lot of poise with the puck which is probably his biggest asset to me. The comfort level in the offensive zone is growing too.

He was playing with Duchene a bit last night. They rotate around a lot though. He's been up and in the lineup 18 straight games now, I'd say it's going well so far.

Former Canes GM Jim Rutherford said late in the 1st in 2013 that at #35 there was a defensemen he coveted but didn't expect to be at #35 that was very highly ranked by Canes brass. This happened just before the Shea Theodore pick. A few people speculate that Bigras was the guy the Canes really wanted. Instead, we traded the #35 (JD Compher) to Buffalo with Jamie McBain in the Andrej Sekera trade.

Anyway, nice steal for the Avs. I love the Canes D prospects right now but can't help but say I'd love to also have Bigras. :)

Did not know that, thanks. It's been said that the Avs had him ranked as a mid first and held their breath all the way to pick 32 to get Bigras.

I forget when exactly that trade was made, was it after Bigras was picked?

Yup.

It was made when Carolina was supposed to pick at #35 so right before that pick, and just after the Avs picked Bigras.

One has to think it was Bigras that Rutherford was that high on. Had a deal in place for the #35 pick long before, but because Bigras was still on the board they waited until he was taken before going forward with the trade.

I remember at the time of the draft before we picked him he was almost the only guy I didn't want us to take going in that range. My only reasoning for it was that I had done a bunch of reading on the guys around that area(Erne, Hagg, Petan, Santini, Theodore, Klimchuk, etc.) so I had a good idea of the type of player we would get with those guys, but I hadn't read a single thing about Bigras and so I really didn't want us to pick him because I didn't know anything about him.

The day after we drafted him I started reading some things on him, and as soon as I saw that he was actually the top ranked skater in the draft I was instantly sold on him.

He's gonna be an amazing player for us, a better skating Vlasic seems more and more likely with every passing game from him.

A better skating VlaÅ¡ić? VlaÅ¡ić is the best defensive d-man in the NHL and has scored 37 points this season. If Bigras becomes half the player VlaÅ¡ić is we'll be doing somersaults.

I think I was one of the first to make the VlaÅ¡ić comparison, but it has to do with style, more than with ability. That being said he looks so calm and collected out there, like a 10 year veteran.

By better skating I literally just meant skating. Not in terms of actual skill, I dont think he'll be as good as Vlasic overall but in terms of just skating I think he already is. Bigras was ranked as a better skater then Mackinnon in his draft year, and Vlasic is not a better skater then Mackinnon. I find we dont get to see Bigras use his skating much because he's very rarely out of position or in a situation where he needs to use his skating. But when it does happen he is a rocket on ice.

I remember one game earlier on in the year he got caught slightly out of position, the puck had squirted past Bodnarchuk at the blue line and it had become a foot race between Bods and 2 of the oppositions forwards for the puck. Bigras was on the far side of the blue line and caught flat footed, but he easily beat all 3 guys to the puck first and avoided the potential 2 on 1. His first couple of strides are crazy powerful.
