It’s one thing to reach once - but 3x? That’s what gets people get fired.

They actually "reached" on all 5 of their picks, in terms of where they were commonly ranked, not just the first 3 guys.

Johansson was hardly on any consensus rankings and Latimer wasn't expected to go 4th round, and they actually traded up to get him.

I'm fine with picking players above the consensus if it makes sense. I didn't mind the Ostapchuk, Johansson and Latimer picks, even if I liked some other guys more at those positions, but the Boucher and Roger picks look hard to justify.

He was probably worth a 7th round pick. Not a second.

Appreciate the honesty.

Pick was a head scratcher when it was made. They seemed to be putting quite a bit of stock into his OHL showcase, which was apparently quite impressive but was a very small sample size and not exactly great competition.

Brandon Carlo at the same age: 27 points in 54 games with a positive presence in a more defensive league.

Selected for the WJCU20 at 18 years old.

If Ben Roger had had Brandon Carlo's CV, I would never have spoken so badly about the quality of Ottawa's choice.

We can also question the choice of Carolina on Bryce Montgomery but it was a much later choice.

The lack of the 2020-21 OHL season will be the root of many missed decisions by NHL franchises and that's to be expected.

Roger should have been taken in the 7th with the puck that was used for Romeo. Not sure of the rationale behind that pick either.

2021 was an absolute disaster of a draft by Mann.

Fixed.

Dorion isn't the head scout anymore. Mann runs the draft now and Dorion has said as much himself.

Has some input undoubtedly, but likely more for top picks like Boucher than guys like Roger.

score one for the randos and unprofessionals
2nd round picks bust. Newsflash!

I remember being on here when Brady Tkachuk was drafted. People said he would be a 3rd line 10g scorer because of his college numbers.

Heck, people on here were convinced Marner was too small and timid to be an impact player.

Anyway...as a Sens fan it's obvious the 2021 draft was garbage.

The Senators continue to make large, wide reaches on players who's best assets are things that are actively trapping for them as prospects. Ben Rodger needs to learn how to play defense, pass the puck, not be caught out of position all the time, the list goes on.

Essentially, the Senators have taken 3 top 50 picks, one inside the top 15, and turned it into:

-A mid round second pick
-A 5th rounder
-A UDFA

I want to go on record and say I do not hate the Sens. I despise terrible drafting and I would clown on any team that farted away excellent draft position like this.

And as expected, these players have busted and were not even offered contracts.

He’s he’s 21 in 6 months, can’t remember the last time an NA player that old was in the draft.

Wouldn't have to remember any further back than last year, Lucas Edmonds 3rd round to TB after playing his OA season in Kingston (and had already turned 21 prior to the draft). It happens pretty much every year, just usually a limited number.

Completely different, he wasn't considered an NA player. He was considered a European player, and was a 1st time drafted player.

If he were an NA player he wouldn't have been eligible for the draft, he'd have been a free agent

False. If that were the case, Kingston wouldn't have been able to pick him in the OHL priority selection, and he would have only been eligible through the CHL import draft.

You are trying to split hairs in an effort to not be wrong. Edmonds played his OA season in the OHL (as a domestic player and not an import) and then was drafted a couple months later at age 21.

Like I said, it's not common but happens pretty much every year, and Edmonds definitely is one example from just last year.
