Would fans / citizens of the Czech Republic and Slovakia support a unified Czechslovakia team in the World Cup? Just curious as a combined team would be far stronger than the current Czech roster.

would canada and usa prefer a combined north america team? would finland sweden prefer a combined scandanavia team? would latvia russia belarus kazakhstan prefer a ussr team?

its the exact same question and answer.

Was Canada/US a unified country in the past? Finland/Sweden?

I only ask to gauge the opinion of Czech and Slovak citizens.

Finland is not Scandinavian, and it offends most Finn's to assume so.

Nordic Countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland , Denmark

Scandinavian Countries: Sweden, Norway, Denmark

No, I don't support that idea. That ship has sailed. Now it's just history.

It wouldn't be a week on this boards without one of these threads.

As zorz has said the ship has sailed. Already there were quite a few players who were 6 years or younger when Czechoslovakia split playing on both teams this year, who have little to no memories of CZE and Slovakia being one country. Tomas Jurco was 4 days old when the two countries became separate and Tomas Hertl or Marko Dano were not even born yet.

In the coming years we will see the players born in the 1990s join both teams and they would hardly identify with Czechoslovakia. It's not the Czechoslovak tradition that they grew up with, they grew up with the "golden" generations of both teams back in the early to mid 2000s.

In a lot of ways the teams are facing the same problems, so it's hard to say how much it would 'help' in terms of the downturn in performance. They would be able to plug up a few more top spots, but it would also keep other players from being able to develop with only a single A team between them, so in the end it might even do more damage than good.

I fail to see why the Czechoslovak team would be much stronger than the current Czech team. Upfront? You would add Hossa and Gáborík to the current Czech core, maybe someone like Tatár. On defense, Sekera and Chára with Višňovský, with the latter two being old and declining. Halák is better than Pavelec but he's not that exceptional either.

Even taking potential off-ice issues aside, it would only be a marginally improved team. Nothing that would change the balance of international hockey as it has developed over the recent years.

I don't think Czechoslovak team would be much stronger than Czech team. Halak, Hossa, Gaborik, Sekera and maybe Tatar. These guys are the only world class players we have right now, IMO. Absolutely no disrespect to Chara and Visnovsky, but as Rexor said, they are both getting old.

EDIT: I am not saying that I wouldn't like to see such team, but unfortunately, I don't think we (Slovakia)have that much to offer.

And Visnovsky finished his NT career for Slovakia back after the 2011 Worlds, so it's hard to imagine he'd change the decision for a Czechoslovakia team anyway...

I for one would be OK with it. Dont think that either us or Czech Rep have such bright future, we can build 2 separate teams and compete with the very best as we used to. I guess other people will see it differently. But i would have no problem cheering for joint team.

Bad idea. At the last World Championships for Czechoslovakia in 1992, there were 2 (!!) Slovak players on the Czechoslovak roster. How horrible for the fans in Bratislava, to have to cheer on what was essentially a foreign team. The Czechoslovak hockey and football teams should have been split immediately after Communists were removed from power in 1989/90 – then the common country of Czechoslovakia, or at the very least the common hockey and football leagues, might perhaps have been preserved. The upcoming Mickey Mouse Bettman Cup in September 2016 is going to be worthless precisely because of featuring mixed teams.

What was so horrible? Were there more deserving Slovaks that were left off the roster?

Also, was it "horrible" in 1976 when Czechoslovakia won the European Football Championships with only 3 Czechs on the roster? ;)

If somebody decide to held tourney based on regional teams I would support this team with some worries about how players whould get along as it is still quite a weird idea to have this guys in one room and its already so long that noone from them, except Jagr, ever experienced it...

I think fans would accept it for one special occasion and also for the reason that we still should get along very easy compare to other teams so it should be our big advantage....

For sure not a foreign team for me. :D

BTW except maybe for slovak football clubs (can't stand especially Slovan) I support Slovakia everywhere. I even loved Pálffy, Bondra or young Gáborík more than Jágr. In 2011 - 2013 my favourite athlete was definitely Peter Sagan. :)

For those Czechs and Slovaks old enough to remember, how popular was the idea of splitting up the country?

I know that it happened peacefully, and with little resistance, but also know there was not a referendum on it. Were the elections prior to breaking up an unofficial referendum where breaking up was a big part of the discussion?

I think it was mostly Slovak politicians who wanted to leave the federation. I don't know about their people but I suspect most of them supported that idea too. Czechs didn't care enough to start a civil war over the matter :sarcasm:

Maybe someone will correct me.

This is where we probably dont find a conclusion. I partly remember that times. General czech opinion is that slovaks wanted independence so the country had to split up. Thats why czechs were booing on slovak prime minister visiting Prague in that times etc. However there was no referendum about it.....

Half year ago I was in the pub with one slovak lady and bunch of czech coworkes. Slovak lady told us that according to surveys there was no strong vote for independence among slovaks and split was basically economic must because of industry differences between both countries. That opinion drove us bit crazy as we all were completely sure that slovaks (or most of them) wanted independence and czechs wanted to keep Czechoslovakia (the latter attitude was more like "ok if you want it, do it). So its maybe up to our slovaks friends here to clarify it.

In my opinion if people (especially slovaks) did not want the split they would block it throught demonstrations or whatever...Still there is still some bad taste left if politicians did it just for economic purposes without asking people.....ANyway it is a history and we have really cool relation. Slovaks work in czech ministries, no one really consider it weird etc....

Of course! Only 2 years later, in 1994, at the Lillehammer Olympics, Slovakia finished 6th after winning the preliminary group (!) and unluckily losing the quarterfinal match against Russia in overtime. You can't seriously say that a team capable of playing so well in 1994 should only have been represented with two players at the Worlds only two years earlier.

Also, the 1990 Worlds were memorable because a sensational new Czech forwards line of teenagers was introduced internationally at that tourney: Reichel – Holík – Jágr. Would it ever have been possible for Slovakia to have 3 youngsters nominated for the Worlds? No, sir, never... Even the most established Slovak players had trouble getting nominated for the Czechoslovakia team; basically only the biggest Slovak stars got nominated, but promising youngsters? Forget it...

Also, was it "horrible" in 1976 when Czechoslovakia won the European Football Championships with only 3 Czechs on the roster? ;)
Well, I for one would have welcomed the "British football model" for hockey. As you know, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own football teams despite being parts of a single country. Not possible back in 1976 or even at the 1990 football World Cup due to Communist centralism, but it would have been a nice model for us to emulate right after 1990. Too bad it didn't happen, and nationalistic passions took over instead, destroying the common football and hockey leagues among other things. Now Slovaks would like to have those common leagues back, but it will likely never happen.

how popular was the idea of splitting up the country?

If there had been a referendum, it would most likely have failed, and most likely due to insufficient turnout. During the 20+ years of Slovak independence, there have been around 9 referendums or so, and each of them except for one failed due to low turnout. (50% of voters need to participate in order for a referendum to be valid.) The only referendum that was successful was that about joining the EU, but very narrowly (51% turnout or so), and gigantic propaganda efforts on the part of all media were needed in order to get the people to show up and cast their vote.

We're largely a lethargic nation, and we just let politicians do whatever they like. Nazi regime during World War II? Why not? Communist regime after 1948? Why not? Russian tanks rolling all over our country in 1968? Why not? Splitting Czechoslovakia after 1992? Why not? NATO and EU? Why not? Etc. ;)

Also, the reasons for the split were hardly "economic"; that's one hell of a euphemism. :D Here's the deal: if you want to exploit something and there are two of you, it's more difficult to do if you need to share all the time. It's a lot easier to "split the loot", so to say, so that each of you can exploit your own exclusive territory. We now have our own castes of oligarchs, and yes, it would have been a lot more difficult for them to flourish in a single country.

Team USA/Canada would absolutely DESTROY the rest of the world. I don't think you guys would want this.

Add Patrick Kane and Phil Kessel to Canada's best roster and it's game over. 10-0 against any team, every game.
