2021 World Junior Championship: Czech Republic Training Camp Roster Preview
Fairly informative article. Looks like our top 2 lines will be:
Raska-Mysak-Novak
Teply-Pytlik-Koffer

I expect all lines to be fairly balanced. None will dominate the game, at the same time, all of them could be competitive in the sense they would not get completely smashed off the ice. If they want to make some impact in the tournament, they will really need to work extra hard and stay solid defensively. They cannot outplay any opponent in the group except for perhaps Austria, no way. Hopefully at least the goaltending could be OK, but still, it would be a great surprise if this team wins any other game in the tournament besides that against Austria.

Oh I definitely agree with that statement 100%. I predict they'll be fairly competitive with anyone but Canada.
Problem is that Russia and USA are considerably better this year. Sweden would be too if they didnt lose some top guys.
So we're in for a tough tournament.
Just hoping to catch Sweden off guard considering the missing players, coaching staff, and no preparation game.

I am really sorry for the teams Sweden and Germany. It is going to be difficult for them, with no preparation game and with the quarantine and all the things around that. At the same time a hope there are not going to be any further COVID-related complications during this tournament. The situation is so depressing here in CZE, with the virus, the lockdown, and all the ralated mess surrounding it, so I am at least looking forward to some good hockey. I think many hockey fans are, probably more than in previous years, since the common mood in the society is currenty so negative and apathetic and people who like hockey are hoping for at least some fun.

Exactly this. I don't think we should be focusing on a top 6 that much.. our top guys aren't up to speed with the other Top 6 guys. We needed a balanced 4 line attack with a focus on team D and the occasional goal. Essentially, we need to play soccer out there and hope for 2-1 games. If we try to match power for power, we are dead in the water. Before a nice influx of talent, the Swiss did this great for years. 4 solid skating lines and go like hell and hope for an opening. Expect to be outshot and outchanced.

It's funny because Pytlik was playing about 5 more minutes a night than Mysak at last year's tourney.

As C depth goes, it is a nice 1-2. Pytlik reminds me a lot of Faksa. I don't expect a tonne of points but I think he can 'eat minutes' and keep us competitive.

That first line is small but I'm curious how they do. Funny that Novak was cut last year but is a first liner this year. I recall you and I talking about this last year and that he should've made the team.

It does not need to be 2-1, it can as well be 4-3. Depends on so many circumstances. You can play a defensive game and score 2 goals on PP, another 2 on counterattacks, and here it is. What will be more important is to keep the character of the game. That is, to stay compact in the own zone, keep the opponents along the boards, be focused around own net. Some counterattacks always occur. But when 75% of the game is going to be played in your zone, you need to stay solid there and let the counterattack opportunities come. Don't care too much about the chances up in front, just wait for something to come, it will always come in hockey.

Captain choice makes sense but Najman and Kucerik as alternates? Hmm seems a bit odd

I don't know any of the guys in person, so I have no idea who may be the leaders. They just went through a long camp, I suppose it became clear during that camp who has leadership skills.

Nick Malik should start as the no.1 goaltender.

Can’t imagine being led by probably your 2 worst players on the team but sounds good.

I would never dare to call those guys "the worst players on the team". I don't see any big difference between the quality of the players on that team, they are all roughly at the same level to me. I expected Myšák or Pytlík to stand out but they haven't this season. There are no exceptional individualities, but also no "weak spots", they all look like OK juniors who may develop into decent Extraliga/Liiga/SHL players, with maybe the two 17 y.o. D-men having some greater perspective before them. This can be a good thing after all (no reliance on two or three young stars can sometimes result in better teamwork), but it may also mean they will lack a leader / difference maker on the ice.

You’ve got a very interesting outlook my friend. I guess we won’t know until the 26th.

Of course, we must way for the tournament to start. I am currently watching Austria playing Switzerland and Austria is not bad at all, so the group is going to be very tough.
It’s early but so far it looks like Austria is awful 5v5. If we don’t get a ton of penalties we should easily win that game.
What’s your take on Karel Mlejnek? Why is he coach this year? Is he good? I know nothing about him.

Quite experienced coach but has more experience as an assistant than a head coach. Coached youth teams in Karlovy Vary for years, them men's team for some time, was the assistant coach in Liberec and then was, quite surprisigly, picked by Milos Riha as the assistant coach of the Czech men's team. Looks to me as a coach who is not a controversial personality, hasn't have any major conflicts with players or so, quite a hard working man who has been taking his career up step by step. I believe that compared to Vaclav Varada he is not such a distinctive personality, in both good and bad. Simply "a hockey coach". But don't know so much about him.

So we have 3 drafted goalies and are starting the undrafted goalie? Classic Czechia! Not that I mind Malik and I do think all 3 are similar in ability.

Mysak as captain is good.

I believe all three goalies are really on very similar level. It has probably been just about how they have been loking at the camp. Would not be surprised if Parik or Bednar get they chance in the tournament too.

Austria looks like a team with a good work ethic to me, they are playing with some grit. Their goalie looks good. Rossi is their best player by miles, but I would also mention Peeters and the 16 y.o. Kasper as very interesting players. Especially Kasper is really deft with the puck and has great passing abilities. Their biggest problem is that their D-men move the puck rather awkwardly. Once their are in the offensive zone, they are capable of creating interesting plays.

It’s not necessarily based on whose the best player. Reference back to captain Ginning for Sweden. Sometimes the best players aren’t the leaders and the grinders are. Fans love storylines where their best players are the leaders, but it’s not a video game.

Good game by the Czechs today, was wondering if Barinka was cut? I see he has started well in the DEL this season and always performed pretty well internationally so not sure why the Czechs wouldn't take him

He turned down the national team to fight for a spot in his DEL team

Alright fellas. How do you feel about this team now?
Pretty impressive game. You could say that Slovaks arent good but who expected Czechs to dominate by so much? I thought it'd be a 1 or 2 goal game to be honest so this was a pleasant surprise.
After the first 10-15 minutes, slovaks had nothing.
Pretty encouraging to see us play a really sound defensive game overall. Only 14 shots allowed.
Our 1st PP unit looks sick... great movement, Craig Button sure loves it.
Great hard working and forechecking performance as I predicted this team would have.
Very few penalties (so rare in Czech hockey)
10 returning players definitely played a big factor here.

I expected to be a better team and win by 2-3 goals. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised by the performance and maybe we could be quite a tough opponent even for top teams. The team looked determined and someone had already written it, it may be better that we have such a balanced team than relying on one or two players.
