This weather blows. I was really hoping to get a 20+ mile ride in this week at 20mph per mile or better.... but just couldn't do it. I did however manage to get 20 miles in at 19.3mph per, which isn't too bad by my standards, but it wasn't my goal. Maybe next week I'll be able to shed some layers and give it a better run.

Windy/cold?

I got to do my regular route for 2 days this week, then it snowed again last night. Pretty nasty headwind yesterday too along with some bike problems as well. :(

Not terribly windy, but the temps were in the low teens. My legs were fine, but I had so many upper body layers on that got in the way... And I've noticed when my toes get numb, I definitely am not able to get as much of a push as I'd like.

Every day next week right now is either going to be miserable cold and/or raining/snowing.

I invested in some thermo shoe covers this week - one of the best purchases I've made, wrt cycling. Regardless of rain, wind or temp, my toes are perpetually balmy.

I almost bought some back in November, but it's been a really mild winter so I didn't bother. After last week, and this week upcoming, I regret that decision.

UnrealMachine, any of these worth a damn? I want a trainer, but I'd really rather not have to break the bank on one if possible.

Yes, a Kurt Kinetic fluid trainer is definitely the way to go. The technology they use behind them as ingenious and is why they offer a (true) lifetime warranty on all of their units. I wish I knew more about them before I bought mine a few years ago. I did buy an older used KK though recently for my girlfriend. It's worth checking your local craigslist if money is tight (keep in mind though you won't get a warranty buying used). Unfortunately, I'm IN LOVE with the Rock n Roll trainer and I'm going to buy one of those after I move. I think it's worth it to be able to have a more realistic feel, engage your core, and do standing sprints without putting too much stress on your bike frame.

Good to know, thanks for the info. Still in the beginning phases of my research... but I could swing that one.

I bought a used bkool hometrainer, rode it twice, then sold it. Horrendously boring. Gist of it - try before you buy, Ray.

Right now, I think I might just need to get use to the idea of it whether I find it entertaining or not... because getting out there for rides where I can really work on sprint and interval type training is not very easy where I work and live, with my current schedule.

I'll probably shop around and see if I can find a store of sorts with no questions asked exchange policies.

In clear violation of the Velominati rules, but a saddle bag is indeed very practical. At least get one that fits a CO2 pump and cartridge, so you don't need the frame-mounted pump.

Oh, and always bring a debit/credit card and your cell phone. Preferably in plastic bags, so that they're not damaged/affected by sweat, rain, or condensation.

Any of you guys riding with Zwift? I hate the trainer, but Zwift really makes riding indoors less boring. It's still not very fun, but I can tolerate it.

Definitely seeing some improvements in my pace. I can now comfortably say I can maintain a pace at about 19.5mph, over anywhere from 20-40 miles.

Now time to get a few 20-25 mile rides north of 20+ and to build endurance at that pace.

And the weather looks like it's finally going to really start improving, which will make it so much easier to get out there. Thank god.

Last couple of workouts have been especially rough. My legs are completely shattered at this point and refuse to recover. I just need to make it to Wednesday and then I'm on vacation and off the bike for a week. If I didn't have the vacation coming up I would have taken a week off probably 2 weeks ago

Got in 106km today. Rode in a group of 5, where I ended up pulling most of the way.

Best thing is, I kept dropping a young woman that's qualified for Hawaii. Then I relented, sat back there and let her have som lee (it was windy AND gusty today).

Nice day, all told :).

Saw a Retül fitter today, with my tri-bike.

Longer stem (angled up, rather than down), pads and extensions way further forward, saddle replaced and moved as far ahead as possible, Extensions angled upwards significantly, into almost a praying mantiss.

Considering the original position, the new one is interesting to say the least, but it looks right when I'm on the bike, and feels surprisingly comfortable. I'm lower on the bike, despite having the fact that the elbow pads sit higher. My shoulders are much more relaxed, so I can get my head lower.

Awesome stuff. I read a lot about proper bike fit over the Fall. I made what I thought were the right adjustments, but now I'm naturally sliding forward a lot in my saddle. Also, rotating my hips farther forward ends up seating me lower & less comfortably and makes me feel like I need to raise the seatpost slightly, again. I really need some time on one of those machines.

Grr. Spring is starting to come and I can't ride.

A week ago I got cut off by a vehicle on my daily ride and my sudden braking threw me over my bars and I fractured some bones in my right hand. The next 3 weeks are going to kill me.

Went for my first ride last night on my old steel Miele, forgot how much I love that bike, not the lightest thing in the world but super fast on the flats, did 29km averaging 35.6kmh but 80% of the ride was with a good back wind, not sure if my training as done anything yet. I lost 4% body fat but didnt lose any actual weight so very interested to see how it plays out this year, I do feel much stronger.

Had my first ride yesterday where my average speed was north of 20mph, over 32 miles. Was really pumped about that. and was over some pretty decent elevation on top of that, too.

I opted out of my last workout this morning. I was feeling that great yesterday so I went to bed early and slept in late. Off for vacation and off the bike for a week starting later today. I'll do an FTP re-test when I get back and then I'll probably be doing all or mostly MTB, depending on the trail conditions.
