If this has been asked and answered already, I apologize, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Does the 200 million being split amongst the owners have any effect on next year's salary cap?

My read on the situation: This is all about separating Merulo from the Coyotes as cleanly and quickly as possible and without a legal mess. It’s clear that nobody has any faith in the guy any more, and everyone wasn’t willing to put up with the whole Mullett situation for several more years. The reason why they’re headed for Salt Lake and not Atlanta or Houston is that the NHL wants to get the full billion plus in expansion fees for those markets. I fully expect the NHL will be back in Phoenix as quickly as is practical. I still remember Gary telling specifically telling the Atlanta fan base that the Winnipeg move had nothing to do with them and everything to do with the worst ownership group the league has ever dealt with. This is only a slightly different variation on that story. By solving the Merulo problem, I believe the NHL is actually doing the Phoenix market a favor in the long run, even if it means immense short term pain.

So f***ing depressing.

I'm not a Coyotes fan but this whole thing is just so sad. Everything about it is a tragedy. Those that deserve to suffer from this are the ones that will profit the most, which is the ultimate and final insult.

Everything about this just seems like the ultimate kick in the nuts.

Lose the team, keep the dirtbag owner and watch Utah's affiliate play in your town with your old prospects that will never play for you.

It's awful and you hope, think, that Meruelo isn't around to own the next iteration of this team.

The reason it’s going to Utah and not Atlanta or Houston is nothing more than Utah had an owner who was most prepared and most willing. The expansion fee isn’t going to change, Ryan Smith was willing to be patient and wait for expansion.

That about sums it up.

I'd rather have no team than one owned by this creep.

I havent seen it anywhere (but I may have missed it)-im assuming that AM would be permitted to sell the rights to the Yotes to someone else (and provisos of keeping franchise in AZ ect)? If they did sell, would new owner still get that 5 year expansion (and to add say AM sells it in year 3 of expansion window, does it reset to 5, or does new owner only have 2 years left?)

Just wondering if that's come out yet.

The NHL were desperate and willing to take a chance on an obvious crook. That the NBA had already turned him down should have been a massive red flag. The NHL has no one to blame but itself. It was obvious he was a rat and it was obvious that he wasn't the guy who was going to get this done once TED failed (and he'd already been outed at as a rat by then).

What happens with the Coyotes-owned sportsbook?

Can Meruelo keep it using the Roadrunners?

That would be my guess. They'll let him keep the license as Roadrunners are technically a professional team and seeing how like 95%+ of gambling revenue comes from about 5 out of the 17 Sportsbooks in operation it's not worth the hassle to spend money on fighting him.

For posterity: It appears that you only need the franchise at time of application for the operator license and Section 5-1306 doesn't list "losing your sports franchise" as a reason to revoke your license, either.

5-1035 does state "Each person licensed under this chapter shall give the department written notice within thirty days after a material change is made to information provided in the licensee's application for a license or renewal."

Expansion fees, relocation fees, and the like do not count as HRR ( Hockey Related Revenue ) so, no, this in no way affects the cap.

Sahara Bets only made $17k in January, after payouts to winners and the state, and have to pay operating costs still.

I'm sure somebody already said it but Arizona moving to Salt Lake City closes the door to a return to Quebec. I always felt that relocation was a better shit for them than expansion.

A good number of us on here think they're going to 36. Houston and Atlanta are 33/34. 35/36 are anyone's guess at this point with no clear favorite. Anything can happen.

The only way Quebec will get a franchise is if we have a 2011 Thrashers/Jets situation again where the NHL needs a place with an arena ASAP and cant afford to wait.

I don’t think we’ve had confirmation either way yet, but it’s not really in anyone’s interest to prevent him from doing so.

I hope it is not true that the NHL. is considering a 2nd chance expansion team to Arizona if they win that land auction June because if there is market that dose not deserve 2nd chance it is Arizona .

The only markets that deserve a 2nd chance are Quebec City , Hamilton & Kansas City not Arizona or especially Atlanta for a third time & if anybody thinks that Arizona & Atlanta are worthy of a 2nd or a 3rd chance they have CRAP FOR BRAINS .

I think we need to admit that the only places who deserve a chance are markets where someone has $1.2B to offer. We can think about nostalgia all we want, and we can think about 'doing right by the fans' all we want. But the reality is that the price is now very very high. (Higher than it should be, in my opinion)

Utah went from being dismissed as a fantastical suggestion for an NHL team just a few years ago (I, and a few others, previously suggested Salt Lake as a longterm expansion target around the 2050s to a decidedly cool response), to seemingly getting a team in a few days. All it takes is the right owner and the right circumstances for a door to open.
