Crosby "I'm comfortable where I'm at"

Something that I don't think gets considered enough is - let's say he does get traded to say, Colorado, and they DON'T win the cup in any year he plays until he retires, I believe the negatives of leaving Pittsburgh and not completing your "one team" dream is more damaging to the legacy over what adding a 4th cup would do.

He's been asked this the last 3 seasons because of the team being a non payoff team. He's obviously annoyed with having to answer this as often as he does.

The issue is the ownership loves the coach and wants to believe he will repeat past success, but also wants to rebuild/retool into the post Sid/Geno era and Sullivan is the wrong coach for that, he still panders to the favourites and can't look past that and the veteran usage, so the team that should be playing a lot of youth and trying more things with a new system and what not, isn't because they are enamoured with a coach that won back 2 back 8 seasons ago or so and has won all of 1 playoff round since and will be missing 3 straight years of the playoffs all the while not prioritizing any youth.

Sullivan is not a coach that develops, most think coaches in the NHL don't need to, but they do to an extent, you get more out of your player etc, it's development. Sid having the coach pander to his every whim to make his line work at the detriment to the entire roster is what happens when you have a coach for too long. That's the issue and Sid can be sad about it all he wants, but by him not speaking up more about it, he'll have to accept the situation.

None of the players will say anything until Sid does, it's out of respect to the Captain. Geno was royally screwed this year where he started off hot and all camp and pre-season he was back with Rakell and had the chemistry and then Sid was off, so naturally let's completely throw Malkin off his game as a winger and strip Rakell off his line and shove Beauvillier and other garbage on his line instead. As a Pens fan, it's hard to be mad when it's deserved with stuff like this.

I don't think he really cares about that, if somehow he was suddenly open to being traded, it'd likely be to Colorado to play alongside Nate. Everyone knows this. The Pens would probably do him a solid and deal him to where he wants to go (also because he has the control anyway) and Colorado makes a ton of sense for him because of his connections to Nate and it being a contender as well.

He can do a Hossa, and has the respect to navigate where he gets traded end of the year if he doesn’t win a cup

I don't think Ray Bourque's career was damaged leaving Boston for 2 seasons after spending parts of 21 seasons there.

Would you think otherwise if he had not won the cup in Colorado?

But seriously, I don’t think that leaving a team really damages a player’s career. But Brodeur, Modano and Alfredsson (as examples) did not really add anything to their careers, just removed themselves from the short list of legends that played their entire careers for a single team.
 
Guy has 3 cups and 2 olympic golds and a world cup and a iihf worlds. He also has the chance to play for the 4 nations cup tomorrow and potentially win another olympic gold next year. Guy has tons of championships. As much as id love to see sid win a 4th cup. He has the chance to obtain multiple other championships here in the twilight of his career. Still plenty to tie up the skates for.

Crosby can do whatever he wants.

But his situation and Hossa's are so completely different that its hard to see why anyone would even bring him up.

A lot of people in this thread have an odd definition of what it means to be competitive. Asking for a trade so you can ride the coattails of a contender means you're more competitive than if you try to lift your team back to contention, apparently.

I honestly don't care either way. He wanted to go to a team he felt he could win with, he had a chance to leave Colorado the following year but he didn't, he stayed and then they won the cup. He didn't win the year he was traded there. Also if he didn't win, well nothing ventured nothing gained..

No one told Ray he needed to re-sign with the Avs for 1yr at 5m the year he did win, he could have left for another team that he felt was a better candidate to win, but he stuck it out and they won, worked out for him and I doubt he'd regret it either way if they didn't. Had he just stayed, he'd have missed the playoffs with Boston in his final 2 seasons.

Not really the same situation. It's 3 Cups vs 1 and it's not like Perry had the choice of staying with the Ducks.

And while he made the finals with MTL, it took unique circumstances and a very hot run

Especially if he just bandwaggons a good team , if he left for other reasons than I think he would get some leeway , Like being closer to family/Canada or playing for his childhood team (not saying he's interested in either)

"My wife is now a doctor in Denver or is opening a model agency in Denver" - yeah, sure go. I don't think anyone really had hard feelings in Ottawa when Mike Fischer was traded to Nashville to be closer to his wife.

"I wanna win one more and my current team sucks" is a little bit different. There IS a cut in the legacy there no matter how it turns out.

What would be better?

"I was loyal to my team until the new ownership decided to prioritize a relationship with a coach over what was best for our careers and the team, so because of that, I think I may be open to being traded since their priorities don't align with mine" - For example...
