Im not sure if anyone posted this one, but in one of the early episodes of "31 Thoughts: the Podcast" Elliotte Friedman mentioned that at the 2016 draft, Montreal had an agreement to trade PK Subban to Vancouver for the #5 pick, but only if Pierre-Luc Dubois was still available.

Unfortunately for Montreal, Columbus took Dubois at #3 and it caused the trade to dissolve.

You should probably address what posts of mine are dumb and why. Otherwise, throwing out vague insults that don't address anything may be the worst use of HFBoards' servers.
No point in arguing with Leaf fans. You just can’t win, no matter what your argument may be.

Because liking a certain team makes one different than all others hockey fans.

Flawless logic.
Don’t mean to lump all Leaf fans together, my apologies. However my time spent on these boards have taught me that the majority of the posters that are Leaf fans are rather... stubborn in their thoughts. Regardless on whether they’re right or wrong.

No idea what was going back the other way but couple months ago Mike Gillis said on Team1040 radio that they were almost positive that they were gonna get Shea Weber and had already talked to him about waving his no trade but at the last second the deal fell apart

when he was 1 year away from UFA, the summer PHI offered him his monster contract, Gillis had convinced Weber to sign a 1 year league minimum offer sheet so he would walk as a UFA if Nashville matched and Vancouver would sign him anyways but at the 11th hour PHI offered him a retirement contract and he chose to get paid big bucks instead

This is the first time I'm hearing that Weber was going to do that. Do you have a link which says that? If that happened it seems something the league might come out and block because why would a player like Weber sign a 1 year offer sheet at the league minimum? Plus I'm sure the NHLPA would not wanted to see that him do that.

Could this be what you are referring to?

Down Goes Brown: The all-time almost-a-Maple-Leaf team - Sportsnet.ca

The idea of the Canadiens sending Roy to their arch-rivals seems unthinkable, until you remember that the two teams were still in separate conferences back in 1995. And according to Roy himself, the Leafs were one of four teams in the running for his services after he walked out on the Canadiens. Granted, Cliff Fletcher says he doesn’t remember even talking to Montreal about Roy. Still, when has a Toronto fan let a minor detail like that get in the way of a good “almost a Maple Leaf” story?

I'm pretty sure he had a similar deal in place with Edmonton, and the asking price included a lot more than the #4 pick (again contingent on PLD).

Calgary Flames Joe Nieuwendyk to the Dallas Star for the high-scoring junior first round draft pick right winger....Todd Harvey.

The Flames wanted Todd Harvey but the Stars wouldn't budge on trading their rookie. Instead they offered a prospect by the name of Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla. So the Flames settled for him and Corey Millen.

The trade, at the time, wouldn't have really been any more crazy. The paths though couldn't have been more different. Harvey never lived up to his expectations (though he did play in over 600 NHL games) while Iginla became the face and saviour of the franchise.

The Oilers didn’t end up doing this but around the 2016 draft a rumoured trade was Drai + Nurse + 4th overall pick for PK. Imagine how different the Habs roster would be if they got that package instead of Weber.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it but Pacioretty to the Kings nearly happened at the draft but it fell apart when Pac disagreed with the terms. I think the return was something like Toffoli and Vilardi/20th overall pick.

Your first 2 weren't close to what you said and yes we all remember the one to the kings, but details of that weren't leaked yet.

Subban+ for Lacavalier

Already stated that's false and Subban was never a part of the offer.

Habs
Brian Savage for Gary Roberts
Federov for Quintal and Malakhov
Roy and Keane for Belfour, Suter and Poulin
Roy and Keane for Yzerman, Osgood and McCarty

I remember hearing there was a better offer for Roy, but don't remember which team.

Take out the Chicago deal and Montreal has quite a team on their hands.

Crazy trade that never happened.

Islanders and Rangers.

The islanders were going to trade star wing Ziggy Palffy and D man Rich Pilon for Nick Sundstrum, Todd Harvey , a first round pick, and a 2-3 million in cash . Yuk. The islanders cable tv network Sportschannel was owned by the Rangers owner Dolan and the Islanders were sometimes not shown because of the Rangers,Devils,Nets,Knicks games if there was too many teams playing the same time. Islanders owners wanted assurances every game would be shown. The commish said nfw is this deal happening and the Isles made a crappy trade with the Kings instead. Now that is an actual crazy trade that did not happen.

Calgary
In 1980 when the Flames were moving from Atlanta to Calgary, Cliff Fletcher was concerned that he needed a superstar player to sell tickets in Calgary. He had a deal worked out in principle with the Maple Leafs sending Kent Nilsson to Toronto for Darryl Sittler. The league wouldn't allow the trade because teams weren't allowed to trade players they claimed from the WHA expansion within the first year of being with their NHL team.

Kent Nilsson was eventually traded to New Jersey for a second round draft pick that got Calgary Joe Nieuwendyk. Nieuwendyk eventually got Calgary Jarome Iginla.

The most famous trade to never happen was Frank Mahovlich in 1962. Mahovlich was going through a contract dispute and walkout during the Leafs training camp. The rest of the story has been copied and pasted from Wikipedia:

At that time, the National Hockey League All-Star Game was played at the beginning of the season, and during a reception in Toronto attended by team executives in the days before the game, Chicago Black Hawks owner James D. Norris offered the Leafs $1 million for Mahovlich. He believed he had an agreement with Leafs co-owner Harold Ballard and paid $1,000 as a deposit with the balance to be delivered by cheque the next morning. The next day, the Leafs gave Mahovlich the money he had been asking for, and told the Black Hawks that their apparent agreement the night before had been a misunderstanding. The Leafs returned the $1,000 deposit. The Black Hawks accused the Leafs of reneging on a deal. Conn Smythe, at this point a minority shareholder in the Leafs, was adamant that the deal should be rejected.

Vancouver
The Montreal Vancouver deal was Horvat, Tanev and the 5th overall (could have been Matthew Tkachuk who was the BPA)

Tanev at the time was a top 3 shutdown defender in the sport.

Would have completely gutted the Canucks franchise.

Maybe not so much crazy as interesting......

In 1995, St. Louis GM Mike Keenan had a deal in place to send the Blues' 1996 1st round pick to Washington for Jason Allison. But Blues ownership declined to approve the trade since St. Louis had been named the host of the 1996 Draft (and perhaps they didn't want to deal another first round pick after having given up their previous five for Scott Stevens/Brendan Shanahan).

St. Louis would end up using that pick on Marty Reasoner. Years later, Keenan would end up coaching Jason Allison in Boston. Allison would have his peak seasons with Keenan. Those late 90s/early 00s Blues teams were pretty good, so it's interesting to imagine if Allison instead of Reasoner would have been enough to get them through that Dallas/Colorado/Detroit mine field in the West.

But in 2001, Allison was up for a new contract which Boston wasn't prepared to pay. Allegedly Mike Milbury offered up the same package to Boston that he had for Alexei Yashin (2nd overall pick, Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt). The rumor was that new Boston GM Mike O'Connell wanted Dave Scatchard instead of Muckalt, which led to Milbury pulling the trigger on the Yashin deal. Years later O'Connell would sign Scatchard, but would trade him 16 games into a four year contract.

It wasn't just Allison for a 1st.
Brett Hull, Peter Bondra and Sergei Gonchar were also part of the trade(Hull and a 1st for Bondra, Allison, Gonchar and a 2nd).
The Blues ownership shot it down because of Hull, not the 1st(which really put a lot of fuel into the Keenan/Hull feud).

And it's notable that this trade was early in '95; before we made the trade for Chris Pronger. The Pronger deal probably doesn't happen if Keenan had been able to push this deal through.

Cause you already said it, it's not true? How do you know? Don't you realize that it's possible the deal went through cause Subban was not offered by Gainey? It was a rumor and we don't know how close or far they were. But Gainey was interested in adding Vinny and the Lightning were likely asking for Subban to be part of the deal.

Gillis said it on the radio, it was also speculated on at the time as Gillis had multiple meetings that lasted several hours with Weber at his home in Sicamous. the reason for the low money 1 year was to get Shea out of Nashville without costing any assets and since you cant trade a player who you match an OS over until after July 1 of the next year he would just walk
