Subban

If CLB walks up the podium and says any name other than PLD. This trade goes through according to Friedman

so essentially Vancouver was franked either way of how that draft went down with Benning.

Supposedly the Primeau for Brind'Amour trade between Carolina and Philadelphia in 2000 was originally going to be Primeau for Lindros

I wonder what other proposals came for Lindros other than the one from PHI. That trade is still hard to believe.

The Rangers offer was Tony Amonte, Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Nemchinov, James Patrick, one of Mike Richter or John Vanbiesbrouck, several (it’s not known exactly how many) first-round picks and $20 million.

Interesting story both offers were accepted and it went to arbitration.

There were a couple trades that JR was close on. Rust for Domi(Arizona). Guentzel+some other stuff for Duchene when he was asking out of Colorado. I think a Letang trade to Florida was also close during the 17/18 season

It wasn't exactly a trade, but the 1988-1994 CBA had a process called "equalization" that happened if you signed a Group I RFA. If you signed a Group I player to an offer sheet, the original team wasn't allowed to match, but you had to compensate them with players/prospects; As opposed to the more familiar Group II RFA which had a predefined set of draft picks. If the two teams couldn't agree, they'd present their offer/request before an independent arbitrator who would choose one.

St. Louis signed Brendan Shanahan in 1991 and they weren't able to come to an agreement with the Devils. St. Louis' final offer to the arbitrator was Rod Brind'Amour, Curtis Joseph, and a couple mid-round picks. New Jersey requested Scott Stevens. The arbitrator ruled in favor of the Devils to the shock of many. I wish the article was archived, but I remember reading that if St. Louis had offered starting goalie Vincent Riendieu instead of the unproven Curtis Joseph, he would have ruled in favor of the Blues.

Equalization proved to be a messy process, so Group I got merged in with Group II in the 1995 CBA.

When the Devils acquired Alex Mogilny from the Canucks for Pederson and Morrison it was originally supposed to be Messier going to NJ not Mogilny.

Might have been a case of the New York Post getting it wrong. For the Mogilny trade, Vancouver ate about a million of his salary for 2000-01. Devils were on the hook for ~4.3 million as I remember it. Doesn't sound like they had the appetite to pick up the option years for Messier at his age.

"He's a fine young man, but what is he now, 40?" said McMullen, whose team has been upset early in the playoffs the last three years. "I'd like to think if we make a trade, it will be for someone who we can keep for a few years.

"Besides, we have a philosophy," McMullen added. "We've been running this team in the proper manner. If we get one $10 million player, what do we do with our other players? I'm not going to do that."

McMullen's comments in Tuesday's newspaper came a day after the New York Post reported that the Devils were close to a deal with the Vancouver Canucks. The Post said that Messier probably would be with New Jersey when the team returns from its seven-game road trip.

Quoting unidentified sources, the Post said the Canucks probably would get centers Denis Pederson and Brendan Morrison plus a second-round draft pick for Messier, a 22-year NHL veteran who recently appeared in his 14th All-Star game.

Messier, who has a no-trade clause, is in the final guaranteed year of his deal, with the Canucks having the option to either re-sign him to two more years for $12 million, or buy out the remainder of the contract for $2 million.[?QUOTE]

Post had some (in retrospect) strange rumors that year:

While Robbie Ftorek has taken turns enraging players by leaving them out of the lineup, last night’s game against the Chicago was the first time he sat Morrison, who has asked to be traded. Often, players about to be dealt are kept out of games for fear that injury could scuttle a deal.

Trade talk abounds concerning Morrison, including one possible deal that would send him, Patrik Elias and Lyle Odelein to Edmonton for Doug Weight and Roman Hamrlik.

Ottawa GM Marshall Johnston insists that he is not trading Alexei Yashin to the Devils, as rumored.

The point, however, is that with George Steinbrenner probably entering the mix, such a decision may rest with Johnston, rather than with the old Devil salary cap. They soon may have the bucks to go along with their considerable tradeable assets.

The point is that it is no longer out of the question.

The deal being rumored, and categorically denied by straight-shooter Johnston, claims the Devils would send Brendan Morrison, Denis Pederson and Sheldon Souray, probably along with a draft pick, to the Senators for Yashin, who has held out all season in an attempt to renegotiate his contract. Yashin is suspended by the Senators and not receiving his $3.6 million salary on what would have been the final year of his contract.

I had always heard it was supposed to be Messier but he didn't want to go to NJ, but maybe it was just rumors.

Simmonds + Voracek for Letang in a rare Pit-Phi trade.

Kunitz for Sharp as a base I remember was a thing

And who could forget the ever-classic Kopitar for Malkin.

Wait, Riendrau along with Brind'amour or just riendeau? Cause them having Shanahan AND Keeping Stevens and joseph would be very interesting

Kunitz for Oshie was also on the table. Kind of crazy how much JR was in trade talks lol

Supposedly Brind'Amour + Riendeau + picks. In the moment, CuJo only had a couple pro seasons under his belt.

The equalization process was tough since the arbitrator wasn't necessarily somebody who was hockey savvy. The Rangers kinda stole Adam Graves from Edmonton. The arbitrator had to choose between the Rangers offer (Troy Mallette) and the Oilers' request (Steven Rice and Louie DeBrusk). The arbitrator would admit that he didn't know how to value Rice/DeBrusk since they didn't have much NHL experience. Whereas Mallette seemed similar to Graves if you looked at their stats. So the arbitrator sided with New York.

Rangers trade Niklas Sundstrom , Todd Harvey , and cash in 1999 to the Islanders for Ziggy Palffy and Rich Pilon . The trade was done. Big money grab and salary dump by bad isles ownership

LA had their original trade for Palffy rejected by the league as well.

In addition, the league yesterday did not approve an informally-submitted deal that would have sent Palffy, Brian Smolinski, Mike Watt and minor league goaltender Marcel Cousineau to the Kings for B-level prospects Mathieu Biron, Scott Barney and Josh Green, minor league forward Jason Podollan, and the eighth overall pick in the June 26 Entry Draft.

Hanifin and Bennett for Hall and Vatanen. A Gaudreau trade may have resulted after that also as Hall would have been 1LW.

I wonder how far along this got but Garth Snow was rumored to have offered every pick in the 2012 draft he had for the #2 overall to select Ryan Murray.
