On today’s 31 thoughts pod, Marek asked Friedman if he could see Kuemper going to Edmonton.

Friedman: “Kuemper is going to cost you a first rounder. He only has one year left. I don’t see Edmonton doing that.”

Aside, Friedman also sees a Merzlikins for Reinhart swap as a possibility.
I found their take on the Penguins to be quite interesting, too. Saying they had to move on from Jarry at this point and they need a top veteran on a shorter deal. Kuemper for Jarry and a 2nd makes some sense to me. I don't mind Jarry as a reclamation project at all. I think he'd make a fun tandem with Hill next season. And we can expose him to Seattle. If they take him, great. If they don't take him, great. We get to keep Hill, and we get a 2nd for the trouble. Saves us $2mil in cash for the budget next season, too.

No f-ing way. Maybe prior to this season but his value right now is not returning a first rounder.
It's possible Friedman is just going off of the intel he had from last off-season and hasn't really circled back for new info on Kuemper. That was my first thought when I listed to the podcast earlier today. I thought Fridman was just answering Marek's question with the last bit of info he had on Kuemper, and didn't give it much thought. He was doing the podcast while driving home in his car from the game he covered on tv last night. LOL. He wasn't at his best. haha.

I like Jarry. I think he's worth taking a crack at.

But I also wonder if we should ask for more than a 2nd. A Jarry for Kuemper swap gives Pittsburgh a solid upgrade for a 1 mil cap bump. I think Kuemper is worth the second alone. So what's our reward for taking on the Jarry contract?

If Jarry was UFA I’d be fine with 2yr 3.5aav. So our reward for Jarry is Jarry. And being able to expose him to Seattle to protect Hill, of course.

What’s to say that’s his best? He just turned 25.

Darcy Kuemper on the other hand just turned 31 and had worse numbers. He’s also five times the cost and we can assume his injury concerns will only get worse with age.

To PIT: Kuemper
To ARI: Jarry+2nd

To VAN: OEL
To ARI: Myers+2nd

To DAL: Kessel
To ARI: 2nd

Gives us FIVE 2nd round picks and saves us $10.5 million in budget space. Which is over 15% of our internal cap for next season.
I think we should ask for more in both the Jarry and Myers trades. A 22 1st. But I don't hate either, just not excited about them.

I'm really only for trading Kessel pre deadline trade if BA has another move lined up. Like he did with the Stepan trade. Kessel out, Hoffman in on a two year deal kind of thing. If he does have that lined then I really don't care about the return either.

I would think Boston or Colorado would be our best bet for a first rounder. Those will be low picks. Rask may retire and Grubauer may shit the bed.
I think Colorado is content with Grubauer. He just had a fantastic season. Depends on what his ask is for a new contract.

Boston seems happy with Swayman. They kept giving him games even when Rask and Halak were healthy. He was playing great. Not sure if they'd move an asset to get a goalie. Go with Swayman/Halak/FA.

Fair enough. I'd probably do it.

One issue with Pittsburgh is they have no picks. They have this year's 2nd, but they don't have a 1st, 3rd, or 4th. Doubt they want to wait around til the fifth round to pick. They don't have a sixth either.

They still have their 2022 2nd though. It was conditionally traded to LA but the condition wasn't met so it drops to a 3rd.

If we can get ‘21 picks in other trades, I’m sure a ‘22 pick would be okay.

Hill hasn’t shown he can take on the load Kuemper does yet. He’ll run 3-4 good games off then the next 3-4 he’s Swiss cheese.

I see Hill backing up Kuemper next season and if we aren’t in playoff contention by the TDL you get assets for Kuemper and let Hill finish out as the #1.

I want Hill to play 40 games next year. I want some other goalie not named Kuemper (so we can get an asset) to play the other 40.

I want to see Kuemper come back IF Bill makes some deals/FA signings that give us a chance to be competitive. If he tears it down for yet another rebuild, then I'd be fine with Hill and some scrub holding it down. Let Hill have a chance to be the guy when the W/Ls really don't matter. If Kuemper comes back, I'd take a shot at signing him to a reasonable extension.

I thought Colorado would have been smart to trade for Kuemper as insurance for this years playoffs and for next year if Grubauer ask was to high or he signed elsewhere. I guess Sakic thought otherwise.

That's how I see it as well. Hill had better numbers than Kuemper, but compared to the numbers to the Kuemper of old they were terrible. The big question is what Kuemper do we get next year?

Why do you guys always want that shiny new toy. Kuemper is a year removed from being at least a top five goalie in the league, and now all I hear is trade him for crap. Did you guys forget our problems we had in net with Domingue and others.
