I would of course never question anyone’s experience with Covid … but I specifically recall reading an article about a year ago which talked about the Covid “brain fog” phenomenon and how so many people were experiencing it.

There was a study done, and one of the funny things that came out of it (funny to me, anyway) was, there were a large % of people who were saying they were experiencing Covid brain fog … and they hadn’t had Covid. Both symptom free and antibody-free.

i still get a laugh out of it.

Brain fog was a common symptom in our society far before Covid.

(I did experience “brain fog” simultaneous with my flu-like symptoms, but couldn’t really tell you if that lack of focus was actually a symptom in and of itself or it was just a consequence of feeling like shit because of all the other symptoms. I know it’s a very common thing people bring up, but it also doesn’t surprise me that having a big ol’ headache, sinus congestion, a crappy cough, a super sore throat, and full body aches and chills would also result in not being at your cognitive best. I’m not sure if that’s called “brain fog” or just “part of being real sick.” But yeah, I did have it.)
There’s a mental health problem that’s mostly dealt with by tweeting stuff once a year.

From CDC website... looks like we're back down to "pre-Omicron" numbers.

Durham
Hoping Durham on the 7th starts lowering the masking requirements.. Same with Orange...

Going to Restaurants I just mostly feel it's silly as Many are unmasked (Can't eat) and over half are obviously not wearing them correctly. and also with the numbers down I figure Hospital numbers are as well.

Seems pretty much all mask requirements are being dropped, other than in places like hospitals* and city buses*, and I’m seeing vaccination requirements loosen up at NC State. Life gradually starting to feel like normal again in Wake County.

* places where masking is probably always a good idea regardless of pandemic status

My big indicator is what Disney World does. Partially because they are a giant company, partially because when I was there in early December they did masks inside and no masks outside, which was hilarious in practice. (Herding people like cattle, elbow to elbow, outside the park for rope drop with no masks, but God forbid you walk in an empty hallway in your hotel without one!)

Disney’s a pretty good canary in the coal mine, because they have to deal with large crowds of the lowest common denominator of Florida on a daily basis.

Yes, I did Disneyland in August (scheduled pre-Delta) and Disneyworld in Jan-Feb (scheduled pre-Omicron.) While both allowed going without masks outside (Universal Hollywood did not because it's in LA, but Disneyland did in Anaheim) we pretty much stayed masked, especially in outdoor lines weaving back and forth.

Seems like "must wear mask in line" would have been a more reasonable rule, but would have made for much more complaining.

Not in the UNC system going forward. Optional only.

Unless I’m overlooking something, I think the only places in Wake County that still require masking by law are those which are governed by state/federal law. Hospitals, transportation centers, etc.

Very interesting and disturbing information coming out of a study of post COVID-19 health issues during the first year post infection. The study was posted in Nature Medicine and looked at data from the VA administrations records. I've posted a link to the study as well as a summary/opinion piece from a physician that is on CNN's site.

The results are clear and very significant: Compared with similar people who had not been infected with SARS-CoV-2, those who recovered from infection had many more blood clots, heart problems and strokes. The extent of the differences across the 20 different cardiovascular conditions is among the greatest of any clinical study I have read. It is jaw-dropping.
Stay in touch with your physician over the next couple of years if you had the infection and especially if you have any other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Thanks for posting. I'll read the full study when I get a chance. Heart disease/strokes run in my family so this is of keen interest to me.

I talked to a critical care nurse at a Durham hospital a month ago who said, only partially joking, that over the past 2 years one of her main duties was wheeling bodies down to the basement. She also said that after every holiday they'd see a spike in covid hospitalizations, undoubtedly from get-togethers where people let their guards down.

On the one hand, the milder strain, new treatments, and lower infection rates are all very good news. On the other, as MJB noted there still seem to be flare ups in certain locations, and there are concerns about long term cardiovascular effects from covid, even for those who didn't have severe symptoms. Bottom line for me: for the near term I'm going to continue to play it safe, keep wearing a mask in "higher risk" settings, and keep up with boosters as they're recommended. Obviously, to each their own.

So something weird. My wife has 2 brothers that have the same birthday, but 6 years apart. They live about 100 miles from each other and yesterday, both came down with Covid at the same time, even though they weren't together at all for the past 3 months (or more). They both texted saying they were experiencing tinnitus. The next day they both said they felt like they had a cold so they each got tested and both confirmed to be Covid.

Seems to be mild cases (and both are vaccinated), but strange how they both got it on the same day.

Being born on the same day, maybe they are quantumly entangled like photons can be? Brotons?

Im shocked LA finally lifted masking requirements. I was sure we’d be wearing them until 2030.

Literally the last place in America to lift the mandate.

I don’t associate any of it with the vaccine. That’s ridiculous to me generally. Most of my stories with that would be pre pandemic regardless.

Ps….and I don’t believe in any shape, way or form that Hamlin dropped because of the vaccine. That’s just dumb. CC has been a thing for a long time, it’s surprising it doesn’t happen more often in the pros.

Why not both?

Why not both?

A) 16 patients. We’re calling this a study?

B) the study draws no conclusions, just notes that in some of their….16……patients there’s elevated spike protein. The study says that may show insight into cases of myocarditis, but that’s all it says. I looked at the study quickly but haven’t watched more than five minutes of this guy. I will listen to the whole thing later, I’m at work right now running around.

C) He starts out by saying this isn’t about anti vaccine or who’s on what side right after he says that we now have to include the vaccine in our differential diagnosis in cardiac arrests?!? Suuuuuuuure. I will give this it’s fair due but he started out with an anti vax statement which knocks the validity down pretty dramatically from the get go.

D) If Hamlin had CC that’s not myocarditis anyways, and doesn’t pertain to his case. Though you may have linked this show because this guy brings the two issues together somehow during the show. I’ll wait till I listen to say more. It should be obvious with some light reading that CC is a one time traumatic event that leads to V fib and potential cardiac arrest, and generally has nothing to do with inflammation of the heart which is myocarditis. So until someone comes out and says Hamlin was walking around playing NFL football with an inflamed heart I’m not seeing it yet. I apologize for not hearing the whole thing as I’m at work, I just wanted to reply and tell you I’m acknowledging what you wrote.
