The mortality rate is kinda misleading, the 2%- 3% that has been calculated is against all contracted cases, not against cases that have had an outcome. Of the cases that had an outcome, recovered or passed away, the mortality rate is closer to 6% to 7%.

To think how easily this virus is passed, how quickly it spreads, imagine a 6% to 7% mortality rate against 35 million people (the number of people in lock down in China), a 7% mortality rate on 35 million people is just shy of 2.5 million people.... that might explain why China was so quick to lock down some cities.
Actually China was slow to respond or even report about the virus when they first realized it was happening. They fumbled around for weeks before they were forced to take drastic action by locking down city of Wuhan. By then the "horse was out of the barn" so to speak.

It's silly but, assets can be bartered with :)
I cashed in my RRSPs , withdrew all my money from my bank accounts went and bought gold bars. The bars are now under my bed, right beside my new shotgun! I'm ready for the apocalypse.

The hype is far more lethal than the flu itself.

I didn't know that.

3300 dead from the virus so far.

How many from the hype?

141 dead in Italy now, and that's going to continue to go up. All schools and universities are now closed there. That's a lot of hype....

The vast majority of the deaths are happening to older people with an existing medical condition. it's very serious but let's try to keep things in perspective.

Yeah.... still that's a lot of dead people. Especially if you were their friends or sons or daughters. Old with a pre-existing condition wasn't a death sentence - until this thing showed up.

As for putting things in perspective, I was just replying to the post that said the hype was more deadly than the virus. Now that's a post with the wrong perspective.

For the record, I'm not panicking, but it's affecting people I know and institutions around the world are taking really big steps to contain this. Dow Jones down another thousand today.

We're lucky that it's still not a big deal hear yet - mostly because of the oceans that surround us. But it's a really big deal in China, Italy, Iran, and now various European countries are really spiking. France up from 300 to 423 yesterday.

Read somewhere that Europe has over 4000 Covid-19 cases in total as of yesterday March 4, 2020. It kind of sneaks up, did not realize the number was that high already.

That only from a few cases reported in Italy last month or so.

The United States does not really have a clear idea of how many infections.

The virus has mutated, and here is a scientific video about that. Mostly science talk, no panic involved, so it may not be interesting to people. The mutated new strain is more virulent.

i have watched people freak out over 1999 (end of days) 2010. (Nostradamus end of the world) flu's(sars, bird flu ect) virus's hell even the christian rapture had people going nuts. the only thing that has changed is the the panic gets incited so much more with social media.

this is just fear mongers and such inciting panic and its working.

this is just the world helping with the population problem

If we are going to be rational and keep things in perspective, then these questions must be answered.

1. How will this virus be contained in North America?

2. Will the virus undergo further mutations?

3. What are the chances of a vaccine appearing anytime soon?

4. Then potential economic impacts to growth and jobs.

Sure, to panic does nothing. To underestimate the seriousness of the situation is clearly a mistake.

So lets see what the government advises the people to do.
