I figure they will still be retained by Rogers, as there is a lot of content to fill. It may mean that guys like Friedman will get increased exposure across all platforms, which is a good thing IMO

Friedman is the next Bobby Mac imo.

His time may be coming sooner then i thought to be "the voice" of hockey business though.

It will be Rogers talent on CBC.

CBC has no revenue to pay anybody.

I think it's essentially the transfer of HNIC to Rogers, from CBC, in exchange for airing it on cbc with commericals promoting CBC content. The production/talent will be all provided by Rogers

I think it's likely that Rogers will just buy most of the CBC talent's contracts. They'll want everything that comes with the HNIC brand

Rogers will just hire CBC/TSN personnel as their contracts expire. CBC already has a close relationship with Rogers. Hughson, Friedman, Healy make weekly, if not daily appearances on Rogers radio stations already.

CBC has the rights for HNIC for four years. After that, they will be phased out completely. This happened with the CFL too. CBC was given rights to show some games at first but eventually they were shut out.

On Kypreos and Millard

Sportsnet’s most prominent host and insider are now the most prominent host and insider for the only network in Canada with exclusive NHL rights for the next 12 years. Millard was like a kid on Santa’s lap during the press conference, provided the kid was a 43-year-old agent of sarcasm from Manitoba.

The NHL would have been smart to split the rights to western and eastern games

If they work for CBC during the 4 years they won't be on HNIC.

No CBC personnel will be on HNIC after this season.

Disagree. Rogers would be even stupider than thought if they let Friedman, Hughson, Maclean, Simpson, and a couple others go elsewhere and not involve them in HNiC.

CBC has the rights to a pair of Saturday night hockey games as an extended branch of the Rogers family of networks.

HNIC is now a Rogers brand that will encompass all of the Rogers TV channels showing hockey that day.

There's a big difference imo when we're talking about what HNIC is now and what it will be as HNIC on CityTV, HNIC on SN360, etc.

That all depends on what kind of contracts they have.

I'm not saying they can't be hired, i'm saying that as CBC employed personnel they likely have no place on the CBC broadcast of hockey on Saturdays as that will be handled by the Rogers employees handling the games on the 7 or 8 channels.

It's not an opinion. Just a statement that CBC employees will have to be hired by Rogers to be on the hockey coverage.

I know, they know, that. The current talent is not good enough. They need hughston, freidman, oak, + many more to adequately serve these broadcasts.

If Rogers is dumb enough to think that Millard and Kypreos are better than MacLean and Friedman, you might be right. Hopefully that isn't the case though.

Rogers has an opportunity to get rid of the garbage and improve their product. I really hope they try to scoop up all the good talent they possibly can.

I can only home that the removal of blackouts will also apply to weekly games on Gamecentre, and that free streaming will continue for the Saturday games.

Of course they need more talent. They also now have 2 groups of people to go after from TSN and HNIC. it's inevitable that it happens but until it does those people are all working for companies that have nothing to do with national NHL coverage.

Agreed. Rogers will need to fill up their cast with TSN/CBC people, at least partially anyway. They need the credibility and the following they bring with them would help too.

Problem is contracts. Not sure about all of them but I do know Dreger is tied to TSN for another 6-7 years or so.

It has nothing to do with being dumb

These people have contracts just like the players do. Hopefully for those at CBC and TSN they have out clauses in case of the national rights going elsewhere so they're not stuck reporting on the QMJHL trade deadline next season.

One thing Wyshynski is wrong about is fans without cable being losers. I cancelled Rogers over an year ago and I watch more hockey now than I did back then. All you need is some basic computer knowledge and a good internet connection, the folks who don't have that or are unwilling to have that or cable are the losers.

I do consider OTA hockey to be important in growing the game especially amongst the immigrant demographic. If Rogers is smart then what they'll do is beef up CityTV so that it reaches areas outside of big cities via OTA and move HNIC to CityTV once the CBC deal ends in four years but I doubt that they do this. Would be huge for their brand though if they did and if CityTV had the American prime-time programming it has now plus Saturday night hockey.
