reading the playoff threads....some conspiracy posters are feeling validated right now, while new conspiracy posters have been created....
What is it with the mass amount of people that actually think, yes they sincerely believe, that Gary Bettman and the NHL have arranged the Oilers incredible comeback to force a Game 7....How in the world could this be arranged??? Does Bettman go and tell Paul Maurice, after being up 3-0, to instruct Barkov, Tkachuk and Bobrovsky to purposely lose the next 3? Does he call the referees before Game 4 and tell them to call everything against the Panthers but don't make it too obvious? Can we please keep these conspiracy theories that exist everywhere else in today's society away from our beloved NHL....
Game 4-6 felt completely different to 7, Florida looked completely different in terms of defenseThe oilers coming back from 3-0 to force game 7 and then losing game 7 is how I would have run the conspiracy if I were in charge.

If there were no draft, and if there were relegation, Canadian teams would be winning all the time
Montreal still cheated the system for a while by monopolizing the French players. And of course it takes a while to turn great teams into shit teams. The salary cap finished the jobs by preventing rich teams like Montréal Canadiens or Toronto Maple Leafs from buying top players. The draft started in '63, plenty of Canadian teams have won since then.
Montreal never monopolized french players. A perfect example of a conspiracy that existed in people's imaginations, not reality.Montreal still cheated the system for a while by monopolizing the French players. OK it was not exactly like that but they still retained a certain advantage as described here:Montreal never monopolized french players. A perfect example of a conspiracy that existed in people's imaginations, not reality.
The only advantage Montreal had was being smarter. Their GM came up with the idea of farm teams, which of course allowed them to find and eventually sign players in the first half of the century, at a time when any teenager was fair game to be signed by any team. Once the NHL implemented the draft, the network Montreal built became obsolete, and with it their visionary advantage. It is a good story which, unfortunately, became twisted into the conspiracy myth that Montreal was gifted their star french players.OK it was not exactly like that but they still retained a certain advantage as described here:

Nevertheless my point stands. Both the draft and the salary cap hurts the richest teams (which are largely Canadian) that would otherwise have a much easier time making cup winning lineups.
What did he say verbatim? Sounds interesting
Most of the Canadian teams are mid or bottom of the league as far as value and revenue.OK it was not exactly like that but they still retained a certain advantage as described here:

Sure but you'd have at least two super teams. Since many of the best players in the world are also Canadian there is a high likelihood they'd rather represent a Canadian team. Montreal would continue to be one of the favorites every single season like it was in the old days. The only advantage Montreal had was being smarter. I agree with you that the cap keeps the richest teams from dominating. However, aside from Toronto and Montreal, most of the richest teams are American. Canadian teams still have a disadvantage, mostly about location and media pressure.

Most UFAs prefer to sign with American teams. When it comes to their NHL careers, Canadian players haven't shown any loyalty to Canadian markets.Sure but you'd have at least two super teams. Didn't Bedard say his favorite team growing up were the Canucks? If he got a hot deal from them don't you think he'd not choose them over the Hawks? Most UFAs prefer to sign with American teams. When it comes to their NHL careers, Canadian players haven't shown any loyalty to Canadian markets.
This is not a credible source, Oilers are not #2 in league revenue. New Jersey ahead of Boston, Chicago, last years Cup Champs and Philly?Ranked: Which NHL Team Takes Home the Most Revenue?
The Oilers are the second-highest earning team in the NHL and the Panthers are 26th. We show the top teams in the NHL by revenue in 2023.www.visualcapitalist.com
In terms of revenue there are 3 Canadian teams in the top5. Similar in terms of valuation. Yes there are some poorer Canadian teams like the Jets or the Senators but it's obvious that the Maple Leafs and the Canadiens would become super teams under different more competitive and fair rules.
Well it's sourced:This is not a credible source, Oilers are not #2 in league revenue. New Jersey ahead of Boston, Chicago, last years Cup Champs and Philly?
Yeah and they did a poor job of compiling that data.Well it's sourced:
This graphic shows every NHL team’s revenue from the 2022/23 season using data from Forbes, compiled by JP Morgan Asset Management.
Edmonton has had a massive growth over the past 5 years. 13% annually according JP Morgan.
NBA is blatantly rigged to this day. Literally refs discretion all day. They make up calls and fouls. The consistency is laughable. NHL though. Game 6. That isn't offside. Yeah it was off by half a mm. But it didnt give them an advantage on the goal..There’s no conspiracy in the NHL. Now if you wanna talk about the NBA in the early 2000s… that’s a whole different thing.
