I was late to The Office and have now watched every episode at least 20 times. While there are still amazing moments, I don’t think the show was the same after the Sabre buyout. Kathy Bates, James Spader and Idris Elba characters almost always bring the show down for me in their episodes.
I’m not as familiar with The Office so let me run this by you.

A couple of friends think that the show was never the same after the writers’ strike (2008-ish). Like it became a bit more friendly, if that makes sense. What do you think about that theory?

Same friends also noted that Alec Baldwin’s character in 30 Rock got some edge sanded off at the same time. I have watched all of that minus the episodes taken off of streaming (I have my ways of getting them….) but I didn’t catch that.

Charlie and Bill was the greatest rhythm section in rock history IMO

Meh. That’s an opinion issue. Im sure they have their supporters and I love the Stones. I think that their longevity was certainly admirable - even if Wyman walked in 1993. The Stones had an amazing run. They were seemingly on top of their abilities from about 1964 to 1978. (Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You were ok but not classics to me). Watts and Wyman backstopped all of that.

That said I’m sure that Jones and Bonham or Baker and Bruce or Lee and Peart or Butler and Ward or Bruford and Levin or some other top notch bass/drums combo have their supporters as well.

I forgot about the writers strike… I remember people were freaking out when they had to wait an extra 6 months for certain shows. Ah, the good ol days. I looked it up to see if the Sabre takeover and your friends theory coincided with each other and its close but not quite. I haven’t noticed that it got less edgy as it went on but it definitely could’ve.

Incredibly talented. Not sure if he is a rock drummer though.

I think this happened with every NBC prestige comedy as time went on. The Office, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, even Brooklyn 99 after NBC got it. They start focusing on ongoing story plots instead of silly non-sequitur stuff that originally drew people in.

As an aside, that's something I appreciate a lot about It's Always Sunny. There's not much, or any, of that. You don't need much backstory to enjoy a random episode (Aside from maybe Mac's sexuality and a few ongoing side-characters, like Cricket.)

I really loved the season 2 finale, might be my favorite episode up to that point. Don't wanna spoil anything but definitely post when you finish it. Season 3 has just been on fire straight out of the gate and it's only 4 episodes in. I almost feel like they got a bit more money to produce the show too since making the switch to HBO from the DC app but I could be off base there.

Im on the 2nd to last episode of the season. This show is getting better and better.

Are you suggesting that you would enjoy a show about nothing? That’s a ridiculous idea that would never work.

I’m watching The Good Place (also NBC) right now and it was serialized from the get go. Every episode ends with a hook for the next one. It’s also not really funny. Lots of reference-as-humor and jokes at the expense of easy targets. The concept is good but it’s bungled hard. Jameela Jalil has some nice… assets, though. ;)

There’s a place for serialized formats, but sitcoms seem to be the least appropriate place for it.

For me that’s definitely a wacky show. The humor is just strange but I stayed with it for a few seasons. It falls off drastically after the big reveal though.

That might be the reason why I’m having a hard time getting into Community. Everyone told me it was amazing and I can’t get past a few episodes each time I pick it up.

I know it’s annoying to hear from people but the beginning is kind of rough.

The show starts as seeming like a starring vehicle for Joel McHale and then improved when it transitioned into being more on the ensemble rather than a central figure.

The show also didn’t mind being “weird” for a network tv show. This was good, for me, but I think it takes all the actors and writers a bit to find their rhythm.

Definitely some spoilers but this article runs down some of the odd jokes the show ran with.

Im going to try to power through the early stuff. The cast really does seem like I should be into this show.

I wonder if you’d be better off trying to hit like 2 season 1 highlight episodes and then if you don’t like them calling it a day.

I hate when my entertainment seems like a hassle and I’m only doing it to hope to like it later.

Just saw IMDB ranked the pilot episode as the worst season 1 episode, which is not great. I forgot it was 24 episode seasons too, they should have been like 10.

Maybe “Introduction to Statistics” as a bell weather episode for the show from season 1? Also “Modern Warfare” is probably the best but it’s also wrapping up the season so maybe it’s too far in.

Once we’re done with the last episode of I Think You Should Leave (I highly recommend it), wife and I are going to pick up on What We Do in the Shadows. The first season was good but the second one was something else.

First two episodes of the new season are pretty great.

I’ve never watched but recorded a few random episodes I found FX airing last week. Is this a show I need to watch from the beginning?
