If that's a first overall pick that is quite a haul. I mean I love McDavid as much as the next but that trade would definitely make the Oilers a more well rounded team in 2-3 years. Could be something like Hughes/Kakko, Kaliyev/Broberg/Zegras, Jost, Makar, Bowers, Barrie. Man I wish I was a Colorado fan.

I think it's worth it for both teams. Let's assume that was the 1st overall pick and the Oilers select Hughes, they'd be able to roll out a 2019-2020 roster of:

Hughes - Draisaitl - Chiasson
Jost - RNH - Puljujarvi
Lucic - Brodziak - Kassian
Khaira - Spooner - Rattie

Klefbom - Larsson
Nurse - Barrie
Russell - Manning/Sekera

With Makar/Bowers coming up through the AHL or outright making the team.

Meanwhile, the Avs would finally have that secondary scoring while still keeping roughly the same lineup:

We don’t need McDavid. We have the best team in the league and we aren’t going to gut it for him. We’re already on the best scoring pace of any team since the mid ‘90s while struggling to keep teams from scoring on us, and you want to send away McDonagh and Vasy for more offense? And as good as McDavid is he’s not worth an elite ppg 1C, a guy who is a 1D on the vast majority of teams in the league, AND one of the best young goalies in the game.

Take Vasy and Talbot out and it would at least be worth considering, but even then I’m not sure it makes us a better team. Or do you think the upgrade from Stamkos to McDavid is going to outweigh having to ice this blue line next year?

(I tried to balance the pairings as best I could but no matter how you slice it we’ve got two absolute rookies, two talented but still growing ELC players, and a guy that Cooper will jump through hoops not to put on the ice.)

It’d still be worth considering simply because of the age difference between McDavid and Stamkos/McDonagh - at some point Stammer and McD are going to fall off so in the long run McDavid would be of greater value to us. But the inclusion of Vasy is a nonstarter.

The idea that you think we would gut the best team in the league for one player is what’s laughable. The idea that we’re on the best scoring pace since the mid ‘90s Pens while giving up 3-5 goals a night and you think the solution is to trade a legit 1D and arguably the best young goalie in the league (on top of a ppg 1C which is an absurd add) for slightly more scoring is what’s laughable. Come on people, at least try to use your brains for a change.

Yep, the Lightning wouldn’t trade Kucherov straight up for McDavid. They already have two elite 1Cs and any gap between Kuch and McDavid is more than compensated for by the fact that Kuch is $3M cheaper. They also wouldn’t trade Hedman and depending on how much he ends up signing for might not trade Point either. The most they would realistically offer (if we ignore NMCs) is Stamkos plus one of their $5M wingers and Edmonton would obviously pass on that, so there would be no deal to be made.

Kucherov and Hedman I get but we'd trade Point any day for McDavid...

But you do realize that we can say bye bye to our Cup hopes if we trade Vasy unless we can regularly score 5 goals in the playoffs. I don't care about value, that trade makes us a worse team.
