I think 140+ is realistic and would be quite amazing in itself. I certainly wouldn't doubt his ability to get more though.

I've been watching NHL since 1986. (Though the first NHL game I watched in full was the last game of the 1985 Finals.)

The three best and most skilled hockey players I've ever seen are:
1. Wayne Gretzky
2. Mario Lemieux
3. Connor McDavid

And holy crap the Oilers' power-play is fun to watch! Tonight, they went "only" 1 for 4, but they could have banged in six or seven goals. It's like a pinball machine in the opponents' end when they're in control.

I hope he beats Gretzky's point record for a single season.
That's never going to happen for a variety of reasons.

That said, by the slightly wonky Hockey Reference's "adjusted points" metric, McDavid scored 158 points in a full season last year, which sits like this (for rough comparison's sakes):

170 - Gretzky 1985-86
166 - Gretzky 1984-85
165 - Lemieux 1988-89 (missed 4 games)
163 - Gretzky 1983-84 (missed 6 games)
159 - Gretzky 1982-83
158 - McDavid 2021 (56-game season)

The method of 'adjusting' seasonal stats to League historical-average scoring rates is highly flawed, but in any case this gives us the clear picture of how unique and rarefied his scoring pace was last season. He's already in the Gretzky-Lemieux levels of scoring pace, albeit not YET for an 80+ game season.

8 (9+12=21) Kevin Stevens 92-93
7 (11+11=22) Mike Bossy 84-85
7 (10+10=20) Wayne Gretzky 83-84
7 (10+ 6=16) Auston Matthews 18-19

I was cracking up watching the power play last night. It’s straight comical how good it is. I’ve never seen anything like that.

Also he played 25 minutes last night. That can’t be manageable

So glad he is Canadian, and the NHL players are going back to the Olympics. I don’t think Canada has ever had a player who is so far above his peers like this. Lemieux and Gretzky were old when they went in the late 90s/early 2000s. And Crosby in 2010 wasn’t scoring like this.

The PP is a work of art all right. He played extra last night because the Oilers play 1 game in 7 days. He is normally around 22 min though. He doesn't seem to have any issue keeping that pace all season.

If the Ducks aren’t playing, then I tune in to the Oilers just to see McDavid. The entire team is a well “oiled” team though and they move the puck so smoothly. It’s incredible to watch, especially on the PP.

That PP is a joy to watch indeed. Pinball machine is quite accurate in describing it !!

If McD can hit 150 in a single season he's going to deserve a place in "all time" conversations. Imagine if he can pass Yzerman's 155 and stand alone behind Mario and Wayne?

I think McD might be the closest player to Gretzky/Mario since they retired.

If he scores 160-170pts this year, I will consider him to be on the same level as gretz.
