There is a group that meets next to the cannon between periods, I think it's more like the twitter people, but has anyone ever suggested a meet up between periods or even before or after the games at a bar?

It would be kinda cool to put names and faces to all the people...we spend enough time talking(arguing) about hockey on here, why not do it over some beers?

Anyone interested? I'll be at the game tomorrow

Not that I'm aware of. I did meet "Moe Bartoli" while going about the escalator to the cheap seats about a month ago. We didn't know it at the time that both of us posted here. He figured it out later and asked me on some thread if I was who he thought I might be.

I think it would be enjoyable to meet most :)laugh:) of the posters here.

I think we should plan something for the draft, maybe R Bar? We could all wear nametags with our monikers on them, just seems like a good time. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll plan it

Can you imagine the pro-Boll/anti-Boll brawl that would ensue

Also, would blah blah, Major Major, and Redstorm 45 just wear one nametag with all three names? Or three nametags with individual names?

You should set this up so that all the names are put on the table and you have to guess which person is which.

I guess it would be me and you against everyone then, haha, I like our odds:yo: But we know the anti-Boll people hate fighting so, I think we're safe!

Trust me, they're very different people. :)

Watching fighting during a hockey game and laying the smack down on some smartmouthed punks are two very different things. :D

Trip to Cleveland

Hello Blue Jackets fans,

I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this, so please forgive me/ignore me/ delete this if it isn't.

I'm heading to Cleveland next weekend for a baseball road trip with some buddies, and just didn't know if you folks had any helpful hints. Last year we went to Pittsburgh and HF was very helpful. I know Cleveland isn't Columbus, but I assume it's the closest of the team boards, so I thought I'd give it a shot here.

We aren't crazy partiers, but we can enjoy an adult beverage responsibly.

Any cool landmarks, interesting stuff, general tips, favourites?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Obviously the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is a big attraction downtown and is worth checking out.

Just west of downtown is Ohio City, which is a great neighborhood and home to the West Side Market - any kind of food you can imagine is there. Also nearby is the Great Lakes Brewing Company - great beer. Not really walkable from downtown, but it's a short ride on the train or a cab ride away.

I like Little Italy, which is about 10 minutes east of downtown. Great food. Check out Presti's Bakery on Mayfield Road.

Plenty of bars and restaurants near the ballpark, with the East 4th area being most lively.

Have a great time. Progressive Field is one of the best.

There's plenty of good bars around the casino (few blocks away) and the Q to hang out at before/after the game

There is also a very cool WWII sub on the lakefront to visit (Skipjack, maybe?). Amazingly small space, the thought of being depth charged in that can is truly terrifying!

Great Lakes Science Center is pretty cool if you're into that sort of thing. Located right next to the Rock Hall.

Thanks all! Those all seem pretty interesting!

The train you speak of is the RTA? Is it relatively easy to navigate/figure out?

The RTA has both buses and trains (to be honest, most Clevelanders are more familiar with the buses).

How easy the trains are to use depends on where in town you;re staying and whether you have a rental car.

If you're staying downtown, walking to the ballpark makes more sense.

By the way, do you have any questions re: the ballpark? I know it pretty well (some of my friends joke that my mail should be forwarded there in the summer).

Here's the RTA website. Feel free to ask if you have any questions (tip: only use the pdf schedules if you are going to print them out, they display sideways on the screen).

Also, if you want to get around downtown quickly and cheaply (as in free), check out the trolleys.

http://riderta.com/sites/default/files/pdf/maps/System_Map_Trolleys.pdf

(By the way, to anyone looking to visit Columbus, COTA has a similar concept, the C-Bus).

By the way, mods, any chance we could get this Cleveland segment moved to the Jackets/Monsters affiliation announcement thread and have it renamed the Cleveland Thread?

Restaurant recommendations:

Winking Lizard Tavern (Huron Road across from the Arena, which is right next to the ballpark).

Mama Santa's (Little Italy)

B-Spot

If you're looking for a good cheap breakfast, check out Cafe Miami on the near west side (State Road). It's a little off the beaten path, but well worth it.

If you plan on having a fast food meal, check out Mr. Hero (local chain)

Unfortunately, the coolest landmark in Cleveland is off-limits right now. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument is in on e of the quadrants of Public Square, which is being torn up right now because some people apparently had an issue with car traffic going through it.

There's a park at West 3rd and Lakeside that has statues of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (hero of War of 1812 battle of Lake Erie) and Jesse Owens (I don't have to explain who he is, right?)

While our tallest building is Key Tower (tallest building between New York and Chicago), the landmark tower is the slightly shorter Terminal Tower, which contains a shopping mall with some good local dining options (Dough Ray Me pizza and Anderson's BBQ in the food court as well as Tower Deli (lunch spot)/Lincoln Tap House (bar and grille) [same ownership] and Susy's Soup elsewhere in the mall). The top of the tower is lit, usually colorfully. Here is the Terminal Tower lights Twitter account which explains the significance of the colors (often just twitter requests)

https://twitter.com/TowerLightsCLE

Also, there's an iron ore freighter named the William G. Mather docked near the Rock Hall and Science Center on the Lakefront at North Coast Harbor.

I'm sure I'll remember more when I am more awake tomorrow.

Also, here's a quick guide to understanding our street numbering system (which I've heard is completely unique and totally incomprehensible to anyone not from Cleveland).

North-South streets are numbered. The central North-South street is Ontario Street (which is downtown, the third base side of the ballpark is along it). Street numbering goes in each direction (West Sixth is six blocks [not six current blocks, some have been combined since the initial street grid was laid out, for example, the ballpark takes up Ontario to East Ninth while the arena goes from Ontario to East Sixth and the stadium from West Third to East Ninth] west of Ontario and East Sixth is six blocks east of Ontario).

The East-West streets are named. Street names (usually) change at Ontario to avoid duplicate addresses. Superior doesn't change to Detroit until the bridge out of downtown (around W.9th), so the western part of Superior is called West Superior. Same with Huron (West Huron) which ends into the Flats at the same intersection. There's also a West Prospect and West Lakeside, if I recall correctly.

Two notes:

If you go too far into the northwestern suburbs, the North-South Streets begin to be named.

West 25th starts to divert from a North-South path fairly quickly and gets renamed Pearl Rd. around MetroHealth Hospital.

Taking the train to Ohio City, go to Terminal Tower (called Tower City [the name of the mall] by many locals), the main train station is in the basement. Take the Red Line toward the airport, get off at the next stop (W.25th).

You need to buy tickets in advance, but there is a ticket machine in the lobby of the station (as well as a change machine if you don't have correct change). If you take a bus, by the way, they do accept cash fares.

Also, if you're over there on Friday or Saturday in the daytime, be sure to check out the West Side Market.

Here's a list of links that comprise a good tutorial on riding the RTA.

http://riderta.com/ridingrta

One note: if they bring up exiting a bus using the back door, that rule is rarely followed, and that's usually only when a passenger in a wheelchair make navigating the front of the bus difficult. If the driver fails to notice the "stop requested" light (activated by pulling on a cord along the top of the windows - this is unnecessary on trains as they stop at all stations), he/she may fail to stop if you try to exit out the back door (driver doesn't see you).

NOTE: a driver missing the "stop requested" light is an extremely rare occurrence and, in my experience, never deliberate.

Also, if you ask a local about the trains, be sure to call it "the rapid". If you ask about "the train", they may think you're catching one of our middle of the night Amtrak departures or have no idea what you're talking aboiut.

The sub is the USS Cod.

http://usscod.org/

Thanks Woodchuck! That is incredible.
We are staying near the stadium, and will have a car, but the more we can walk to, the better.

A few questions/comment:
1. Is the USS Cod within walking distance of the stadium?
2. Yes, I know who Jesse Owens is.
3. Is there a Mr.Hero near the ballpark?
4. Is it easier to drive and find parking at the Market or to take the rapid?
5. The streets sound very confusing. One guy loves maps so he should be useful to have around haha.
6. Is there a 'specialty' food/beverage that Progressive Field has that we should try when we are there? Any other tips and tricks/interesting stuff for the ballpark? How long ahead of game time can we get in?

Also, what can we expect from native Clevelanders as a) general people but b) respectful fans wearing opposition jerseys
