Name: Chris
Gender: Male
Age: 18, 19 in July
Location: New Britain, CT
Status: Single. Gotta find a girl that likes hockey, lol.
Occupation: Freshman at Central Connecticut State University. Write for the CCSU Recorder, pretty much about the Hartford Whalers lol. Majoring in Communication and a minor in Journalism. Planning on transferring eventually to Suffolk in Boston to major in Print Journalism.
Favoite Music Artist(s): Alice in Chains, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Metallica, Sublime, Rammstein, Live, Beastie Boys, Nirvana, the list goes on....
Favorite TV show: The Simpsons, Chappelle's Show, Wondershowzen and the Daily Show
Favorite Book(s) or Author(s): Anything on Socialism, Communism, Eastern European history, Cold War, 20th Century History, or Kury Vonnegut.
Favorite Av: Possibly Hejduk or Skrastins
Favorite Ex-Av: Fiset, Roy, and Forsberg
Favorite non-Av: Ilya Kovalchuk
Next or other favorite team: The Boston Bruins. Both of these teams will suffice until the Whalers and/or Nordiques return.
Favorite Av moment: I dont know if I have been a fan long enough to experience one. Possibly just seeing Roy play out his career working his *** off as usual.
How and when did you become an Av fan?: I wish there was an easy answer.
Here is my story:
I began being a hockey fan because of NHL 95 for Sega. My cousin had it. I knew all about the Whalers, but wasnt sure if I wanted them as my team. (It was a bit of a stigma back then when you are 7 and a Whalers fan. I dont know why, it just was) So my cousin, who played hockey so I had 100% faith in him (he was 6 months younger than I) decided to play a little joke on me. One that would effect my team picking for a while. We began playing as the Ducks. He said that this was an awesome team. So I became a Ducks fan. I then saw him less than a month afterward wearing a Red Wings hat. Traitor. He told me he didnt want me to have the same team as him so that we could both have a team to always be when playing the game. Fair enough. We played his game alot, and one night I remember playing with him. We were the Quebec Nordiques. We played a shortened season and entire playoffs. We won the Stanley Cup with them and we were way past our bedtime. It was glorious for a little kid. I kind of liked Quebec ever since. I went to a Whalers game in their final season, and they beat the Rangers 7-2. I liked the Whalers ever since. They only had a couple months left though so I didnt really have much time with them, and I refused to support Carolina.
When the Whale left, I still liked the Ducks, but also warmed up to the Bruins. They were local, and I never minded them, so I began to follow them. The Nordiques had already moved from Quebec, and I didnt think it was right to like them. It took a little while to warm up to the Avs. The whole Ducks thing faded away and I really needed a West team to follow. When Bourque left Boston, I am not gonna lie, I was pissed. I wasnt really happy he was with the Avs, and my consideration of following them was halted....for the moment. I saw them win the Cup, and though I wasnt cheering for them, and disappointed that Bourque did it without the Bruins, the joy in his eyes was nothing that I had ever seen. He won this one for Boston. This was really for us.
Boston and Avs ever since. (That Ducks cup run a couple years ago was spectacular though, and since I idolized Kariya and Selanne as a kid I was very happy to see they had a shot to win it.) When Kariya and Selanne signed with the Avs, that was probably the point where I became a diehard Avs fan. That was when they were equal to the Bruins, and are still there today. Even while living in CT, I did not get NESN, so I would never see the Bruins play. ESPN played the Avs alot, so I got to watch alot of Avs games through high school, it was great.
I just want to be a part of seeing the Avs winning a cup before this generation of players switches their sticks for golf clubs.
Come on Colorado!
here I go.
