Stats say otherwise.
Shot Attempts 66-56 Avs
Shots on Goal 30-25 Avs
Scoring Chances 28-22 Avs
High Danger Chances 16-8 Nashville (Avs only 1 in the 3rd)
xGF 4.04-2.51 Nashville
I thought the Avs played relatively well (considering our situation) and absolutely had their chances to go back by a couple of goals. These stats back this up IMHO.
Third goal was not a bad one, wtf. It was a bomb from relatively short distance through a screen from one of our own player who tried to block the shot, but failed, Instead only made it harder for Annunen to see the shot.
Only first goal is one that he should have done better, but it was Stamkos one-timer from circle in powerplay. Better goalies conceded from Stamkos shooting like this.
If we were out-goaltended, its because they played 8-million per year perennial Vezina nominee, while we played a rookie earning 10 times less, who should be a back-up, but is asked to play no.1. Despite that still conceded only one goal more.
His biggest weakness is side-to-side movement and speed, when you do a fake shot, freeze him, and pass it across, means he lost any sort of positioning advantage he had and went into struggle mode. Some goalers who struggle, flop all over the crease like we saw with Varlamov, Rinne, and Fleury. Others who struggle, just try to make themselves look as big as possible. The advantage is that the athletic goalers can make saves they are normally not able to make. Annunen wasn't reacting to the one-timer with any reflexes whatsoever, he went into a large butterfly mode and "hoped" the puck hit him. It is absolutely a bad goal to give him by him not because it was weak by any means, but because his weakness got abused there for the GWG.
Remember we might be in the stage where there is not enough data or analytics against Annunen, which is how we're surviving with him. The true test is when he gets like 50+ starts and the analytic data goes from unreliable to reliable. We all know his weaknesses because we watch day after day here as hardcore fans, when teams know all you need to do is get him to move side to side, it could potentially open him up to a death sentence. I am writing all of this not because I want him to fail, I would freaking love for him to eventually turn into a starter, but I do have my concerns.
Saros clearly outplayed Justus yesterday, no doubt about that so when you let in weak-ish goals, they hurt even more.
