Give him the Suzuki deal and call it a day. Every day passes he adds 100k to that contract.

Caufield's agent is Pat Brisson. So it wouldn't surprise me if Pat is the one a little on the patient side feeling confident Caufield will have a break out season and drive up his contract value.

This is based off of nothing but I’ll admit, I’m materially concerned that Caufield being an American is signalling toward some sort of hesitation about signing an 8+ year contract in Montreal. Yes, his dad is Canadian, but I hope this gets done sooner than later and I’d be very disappointed to see some sort of 4~ year contract signed.

Brisson doesn't decide, Caufield does. If there's an offer on the table, Brisson has to show it to Cole and the latter can sign it if he wants more security now. The all-consuming need for more, more, more is not a general behavior. Some do, some don't. Some are way more concerned about acquiring security, because of the injury risks and short career lenght. Also, most good gamblers know, you take the lump sum now, rather than risking losing it later. You never know what can happen and a lot of people function this way, just as much or evenmore so than wanting more, more and more.

Ditto.

Unless they are unsure of Caufield, the moment is now to convince Caufield to sign an aggregate contract mixing a bridge with a long term deal to permit the Habs to have more cap flexibility to win later on. If Cole wants to win, he should be easily convinced that this avenue is best for both.

Also, Caufield doesn't strike me as greedy, so I'm doubtful Brisson is all out on convincing him to wait.

He'd still be an RFA so I'm fine with giving him the Robertson contract

Yes that is the worst case scenario agreed it’s not THAT bad, but I’m seriously hoping for something like a Suzuki contract. We’ll see I guess, but the longer we wait the more nervous I get

Yes but one year from UFA he could take the qualifying offer and walk. Also like Robertson's contract it would likely be back loaded to increase the Q.O.

4 years for Caufield would be a mistake imo. Though I realize you can't force a player to sign long term.

Yes, but half of the reason a player has an agent is to advise them on such things. If Brisson says he should wait, he will wait.

I personally would never wait if it was my first big contract (say anything over 20 millions). I would sign now. One bad knee and you're done.

It's more the big contract you get in your late-20s that is worth waiting for, since you usually made 10+ millions already (assuming we're talking a regular player).

The league has said the cap should go up significantly next year. Agents will use this...

The League said the cap would go up significantly in 2024, not next year. It should only rise 1 mil next season. That would be followed by a 4 mil cap increase.

I feel like we could get an 8x8 right now. If he scores 40 goals it probably comes to 9.5x8 or 8x4 which then becomes 10x8 afterward.
