I know I’m in the minority here but I just can’t shake off the worry about his size and the potential for injuries. If he was built like MSL it’s one thing, but he’s not.

Don’t know man, I would have waited another 2 years to see what happens before giving him the big contract (If the rumor is true)

You have no choice but to give him the big deal at this point. He's identified as a key peice to the core moving forward, and now you gotta keep him happy.

But once the contract hits, the honeymoon period is over. He's going to get grilled hard if he ain't scoring at a high rate. There will be more caufield haters chiming in at some point on this board too during the course of the contract.

I wonder how he manages the expectation shift, although judging on his personality, I doubt he gets phased much.

Anyone else think Cole isn't a proven asset yet? We haven't even seen one full season of play from him yet. I dunno, I'm just very skeptical and admittedly pessimistic about thinking we could actually have a decent player that will consistently score 30 goals+ a year.

Did you SEE the 2021 playoffs..? He was 10 games into his rookie career.. ended up one as the 5 best players on the run..

I did, players can get hot. Remember Poehling 4 goals in a game? Granted, Caulfield is a much larger sample size. But still no full season sample in sight. I'll take my reservations on this.

But what’s the harm in waiting a bit more?

If he turns out better than expected then good - pay him more. If not then you just saved yourself from another albatross contract that we already have too many of.

He’s already had one major shoulder injury

A winger isn't worth 10m if he's not named Ovechkin...

Marner isn't and he's amazing. Kucherov doesn't make that and Pastrnak has proved much more than Caufield has in 2 seasons before earning it.

We all know the talent but it's not like he brings more intangibles than goals and assists. If cap goes up we can justify 8m ish but we get 8 years. Can't fathom it'll be much more than that, if the agent dares brings up taxes, Kent will rebuttal with added add campaigns and exposure revenue....
Kucherov, Pasta are definitely worth 10 mil. Marner would be but I seriously question his heart. Others who are up and coming would also be worth it in the near future…

CC is not worth that now. But I’d be fine with a Suzuki type contract. If he stays healthy, he’s going to be much better than Suzuki is.

He was pacing for 50 most of the year. Fell off a bit after getting hurt but still paced for 46.

Injuries can’t be predicted but those numbers are fair. I think his deal will be a bargain at the end of everything.

It wasn’t just this season. He’s paced for it since MSL took over. That’s not a player getting hit, it’s indicative of his talent. And he was able to do it on a team that was ice cold offensively too.

And if you want a bigger sample size, look at his junior career. He broke records. He’s the real deal. Only thing that might derail him is his health.

Poehling barely scored more than 4 goals a season in NCAA so people had to take that game with a huge grain of salt.

Caufield has proven he can score goals at every level he's played at, I think he's shown enough that he can be a proven goal scorer in the league.

Hmm.... Caufield show already that he is a star type of forward. This guy isn't just a elite goal scorer right now, he have great hands, great skating ability and great passing ability aswell.

Just come on... since MSL is there... it's like 47 goals over 82 games.... that comment you just made is insane lol.

Everyone likes to bring up Poehling but I really don’t feel like anybody seriously thought he was going to light the world on fire even if he did have that 4g game. It was obviously a flash in the pan and he was obviously not ready for prime time.

While I’d prefer a more cautious deal that has a 6m caphit, Caufield is nothing like Poehling.

He’s been “hot” since he entered the league
Exactly lol

A player on a hot streak is a guy like RHP who scored 14 goals in 33 games while having a shooting percentage between 25 and 30%. Which we know will get back to normal next year and won’t score as much.

Caufield is constant and his 26 goals in 46 games is just his norm. He has been on this pace since around february last year, shooting percentage around 15% which is the normal % for a goal scorer like him.

What's the latest talk regarding his contract extension? I take it a long term and short term bridge type deal must be on the table and the Habs are waiting on Brisson for direction

Snipers run hot and cold, Caulfield will have dry streaks again at some point.

But outside of injuries he's as much of a proven commodity as we've seen from any homegrown prospect in a while. Honestly at this point the question is more if he's just going to settle into being good or very good.

Play a few home games in Wisconsin if he asks for it! Anything!

I figure they talked contract and approximate terms before his operation anyway.

I can't remember if it was the Winnipeg series or the Vegas series but he was getting like dozens of chances/breakaways a game. Just didn't quite have the confidence in his shot yet and seemed to defer to teammates. But he was playing like a future superstar. I can't imagine watching those playoffs when he was that green and still hoping he could POSSIBLY crack 30 goals with his pedigree.

He pretty much paced for 50 this year and how long was he playing injured? lol.

Injury concerns could be a thing cuz of his size going forward but certainly not his potential. Betting against him isn't smart at this point.
