That history is there at 24-26 years old. Coup be cause for concern. However, SJs defense could break the spirits of any goalie and yet he’s been SJs best player (other than Celebrini) and a huge positive in what could have been a terrible room- for two years. Maybe Granlund, but I’d go Mackenzie.

Goalie is hard, I don’t see Mackenzie anymore likely to be frail than any goalie who outside the top 5-8 it’s in the world.

Look at Adin hills jump from SJ to Vegas. In my opinion, Blackwood was worlds better on equally bad sharks teams.
I guess we'll find out. He certainly has the talent but like I said his biggest issue is being mentally frail. Just don't underestimate the fact that now he's on a playoff team & he's officially declared as 1a goalie that now pressure is going to be on him. I know he has the athleticism. Just is he going to be able to handle all this pressure? It's one thing playing for a bottom team with no pressure or expectations. It's a whole different story when you're the guy for a playoff team. Time will tell. I just know from what I've seen that he plays fantastic when he's on, but when he cracks he cracks like an egg and it's bad.

Sakic and his team deserve the benefit of the doubt when it comes to these types of contracts and player evaluation.

Is it unusual contract? Yes

But they definitely saw something that led them to believe it was worth the gamble. Hes already an upgrade over what they have so even if its an overpay, they still have an upgrade in net.

That is a disgusting contract. He has fallen off a cliff over the last 4 years but has had a surprisingly good bunch of games this year (contract year) and cashed out.

Goalies in his caliber are always available in the summer....no need to commit to them long term.

Lol Lankinen signed for 800K this season.

How long till the AVS give up assets to get rid of this contract.

Well, okay. I guess he's the guy. Risky. The short deals are easier to get out of. I hope we found our 2022 Kuemper. If not, we'll be in some trouble.

I mean….can’t blame them for the most part. However yes it’s very apparent that they haven’t seen how Blackwood was playing in San Jose.

Blackwood was overall good in 2023-2024, and he's been extremely solid this year for the Sharks before making his way to the Avalanche roster.

His contract is deserved, and the rising cap takes most of the risk away.

Blackwood's $5.25M deal for 5 years won't be that bad for the Avalanche even if things go sideways for him. But if he manages to keep playing at the high level he's shown so far this season, this deal could actually be a good one for Colorado in the long run.

Moreso since they just want more consistency and solid performances in net after Georgiev and his struggles this season.

Basically, it's low-risk/medium-reward for the Avalanche on this one.

Wow that’s just absurd to me. Absolute anchor of a deal already imo.

He hasn’t had a save % over .899 in the last 3 years.

He's having a strong season and is still relatively young. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

17th highest paid goalie in the league. If the Avs, with their roster can’t expect Blackwood to be a top 17 goalie in the NHL they don’t ever make him their trade target in the first place.

He has about a year and a half of consistent play now. His entire Sharks tenure has been a complete success. I wouldn’t be as scared as Devils fans are demanding others to be in this thread lol. Sharks fans seem to love him, Avs fans seem on board and Friedman has said the Avs have been around him for quite some time dating back to last year so It sounds like the Avs brass believe in him as well.

It’s not a discount or anything but definitely seems fair.

Also he is the best Canadian goalie in the NHL this year. Surprised he didn’t get talked about during that whole process.

This definitely does not seem like a discount. Colorado is one of the only teams I don't absolutely hate in the west, so I hope this works out for them and they can knock off Oilers, Canucks, Vegas etc.
