Petterson seems to be damaged goods this year with knee issues. My guess is that it was Petterson -> Rantanen -> Miller in the cost to acquire, but Van wouldn't come down on EP.

I like last nights deal better.
This was in response to us going after a center now that we’re even weaker at that position, I kind of doubt they go after any sort of 2C option after swinging for Rantanen, but a proper vet leadership guy for the 4C would make a lot of sense.Nothing too unexpected. He did say that “Until we have the best 20 players on our team, we’ll always be looking to get better.”
So McDavid, pack your shit. We’re coming for you.
Of note in the press conference, tulsky was directly asked if rantanen would play center. Tulsky deferred to rod, saying how the roster is used is up to him. So, potentially we are better at c than yesterday. This was in response to us going after a center now that we’re even weaker at that position, I kind of doubt they go after any sort of 2C option after swinging for Rantanen, but a proper vet leadership guy for the 4C would make a lot of sense.
Right back Carolina where he thrivesCounter point: he has seemed to struggle under the pressure of performing during contract years, and this trade basically puts him at the start of a an 18 month contract negotiation. I think he will struggle a bit and then the internal pressure will build, then the comparisons will be made…and he will walk at the end of next year.
All that said, I really like the kid and his game and hope I am wrong.
HFB would lose its f***ing mind if he signs here for something around the MacKinnon contractLeBruns article suggest Rants wasn’t set on 14M and would have taken less to stay than July 1st market would have given him
But Avs saw him as too expensive even at the Macks cap hit
Seems like the organization knows it's far from a guarantee he re-signs here for next year. Gonna be fun to see the fanbase react if Rantanen signs elsewhere this offseason. I imagine the Canes having a tough time wanting to commit to 13-14M per season. Will be interesting to see if we can convince him to stay.
Yeah what I'm reading from that is that we are willing to pay what he wants, what we need to do is make sure we convince him that Raleigh is a place he can see himself for the next 8 years, because the contract is there if he wants it.

Good morning, did I miss something?
Great question about EP vs Rantanen.Panic move probably isn’t the right term, since we’ve apparently been in discussions with them for a deal revolving around Rantanen and Necas since the draft.
But they may have panicked a bit because we were apparently thinking about dealing Necas for EP, which would cause them to lose a possible suitor for Rantanen.
And honestly, I’m not sure who I’d take over Rantanen vs. EP. Rantanen is the better player, but a FA that wants a lot. EP fits our positional need better and is already locked long term.

This actually gives me hope both teams win this trade:
Necas playing more minutes puts up more points.
Rantanen playing less minutes doesn’t have to conserve as much.
Rantanen and Aho have been close friends for a long time, so I'm sure that KK has known him for a while now through hanging out with Aho.KK going to him and saying "MITÄ MIES?" which is like What's up man? made me laugh, bro was so happy.
Im not sure how anyone can compare Petterson and Rantanen. Petterson had one outlier season, outside of that he is a clone of Aho points wise. Rantanen is better than Aho and Petterson by a good bit. This is a strong move by Tulsky and makes the team a lot better.Great question about EP vs Rantanen.
To add to your pros and cons list of the debate, I think Rantanen is a much more consistent player for a super star than EP is though. Also, the cost to acquire EP would've been higher than what we paid to get Rantanen. Let's say Morrow was a demand as a + on top of Necas, Roslovic/Drury, 2025 1st round pick (this could be a lighter cost than what Vancouver was asking for all I know). Just Morrow alone as a plus is a big cost considering the fact that once Burns retires, our RHD depth is weak. If Morrow can be counted on for a top 4 role and is good, that's huge for our franchise.
Last thing is that Rantanen did play center when MacKinnon was injured, and he did well. We could play him as a center if Rod chooses to do so (as Tulsky said in his presser).

Their whole team and coach appeared to be in disbelief about it all in the interviews afterwards and completely caught off guard.I watched Necas 1st game in Colorado. He was on pp1 but on the right half wall as the left is McKs. He also passed up a super high scoring chance to pass to McK. All in all not an amazing debut but I'm sure he'll figure things out. I'd probably be a bit shell shocked in his shoes.
