It's still a pretty solid trade even if he chooses to play elsewhere in UFA. The Canes only lost a 2nd, a 4th, Drury, and an extra season of team control with Necas to take on the Rantanen contract gamble. Dundon and Tulsky are not going to waste even a bit of that $30M in cap space to boost the team.

You'll love Rants and I have no doubt he'll re-sign there.

I'm really intrigued how he looks with the Canes where the minutes are more balanced. Rants knew how to put up points, but one if his main critiques was his effort level and being a non-factor for many games outside of scoring.

But if his minutes go from 22-23 minutes a night to 18-19 minutes a night I think we'll see a more engaged Rants.

miller retained at 50%. A lot of people presumed we weren’t getting retention there which makes sense. We weren’t doing Miller without retention.

Friedman said we were discussing deals for either Petterssen or Miller. Wouldn't the package we gave up for Rantenen be closer to what we'd have offered for Petterssen than what we'd have offered for Miller?

Tulsky labeled him a “power forward” in the press release. He’s not that in the traditional sense obviously.

I think that comment points to an organization that wasn’t satisfied with the stylistic mix. Aho and Jarvis play hard, but can only do so much at their size. Surrounding them with Necas and in years past, Teravainen, was finesse overload. This is part why I didn’t lose sleep over Guentzel. He was more of the same.

I also like that they’re trying something different on the PP. Going with the status quo would have had me feeling uneasy.

Aren’t he and Aho long time friends as well? I have feeling this trade doesn’t happen without some gentleman’s agreements in place. I guess we’ll see. Doesn’t seem like the Org would take the risk again after Guentzel.

There were no advanced discussions with Rantanen’s camp about the parameters of a potential extension before the trade was completed, according to league sources. The 28-year-old winger was said to have been completely blindsided by a move away from the only NHL team he’s ever played for.

The origin of the trade discussions with Carolina actually goes back to before June’s draft when the Hurricanes were at a contract impasse with Necas and shopping him around the league, according to league sources.

It was the Avalanche who raised it as a possibility at that stage, but a deal never got close.

Those talks picked back up roughly two months ago and eventually grew more serious. They ultimately got to a point where Carolina had to choose between making a trade for Rantanen or acquiring one of the Canucks stars. Pettersson is signed through 2032, Miller 2030. The Hurricanes didn’t opt for the safest option.
