The other part of me says that he’s signing pretty much his final major contract.
Whether he puts up 80 points per year or 100, does it really matter at that point since he’s gotten his contract.
I would think the style of play of your team, once you’ve actually gotten your major contract, would be so far down the list compared to ability to win, quality of life, teammates, etc.
Coaches come and go. Rod could be replaced within a year for a completely different coach. Same thing if Rants goes to a team where he loves the style. That team could turn around in a year or 2 and hire Tortorella.
He’s likely to sign a 7 or 8 year contract. He’s likely to have AT LEAST 2 different coaches during his time.
