Truly awful work by Carolina if so.
CMac knew what he was doing when he didn't give permission to Carolina to speak to the agent before the trade.

I don't blame Carolina, they reportedly offered him top money over 8 years.

I don't know what Rants has in mind here but he's setting himself up for disappointment.

If he's traded and sucks with the new team too, every single GM in the league is going to believe that he was the product of Mackinnon in Colorado and there's no chance they offer him more over 7 years than what Carolina is offering over 8 years right now.

It's possible that we are witnessing another Klingberg-like blunder.

Yes, but even bigger.

Where did you see Carolina actually made an offer?

Its been reported by pretty much all the insiders...last one was Pagnotta:

Carolina is willing to give him the big bucks that he’s looking for, in that $14 million (per year) range.

There hasn't been any mention of that. Friedman said they talked during 4-nations, but that's about it.
Why are you even doubting it?

They have been opened about the fact that they want to keep him as soon as they traded for him. They don't want another Guentzel situation which is why they'll trade him if they can't sign him. They are trying hard, though. That's just common sense, the deadline is pretty damn soon.

I had not seen it reported by anyone else. I don't follow Pagnotta though, forgot about him.

If that's true, he's driving the car right off the cliff.

Maybe we should trade for Mikko Rantanen.

To play 2C

Calling Pagnotta an insider is a bit of a stretch TBH...

I have no doubt they are trying to keep him, but I haven't seen any real numbers thrown around.

It will be interesting to see. It's quite possible that Mikko himself is hesitant because it hasn't been a rosy start in Carolina. Making a big commitment for 8 years might not be the best idea, even if that would land him the biggest contract.

Yeesh.. if you're going to bet on yourself that hard I'd recommend laying off the death sticks in the offseason.

If Carolina can't sign Rantanen soon, I'm fairly confident that they could swap him for Marner and try their luck again.

Marner ain't gonna waive for Carolina lol...

I don't think about it's "betting on yourself". My point was actually that maybe Mikko doesn't like Carolina. It certainly hasn't begun well. If he's not re-signing with Carolina soon, it may have nothing to do with money.

Yeah, but he's taking a huge risk going to UFA playing the way he is.

Ah f*** I didn't realize Marner had trade protection.

Unless Rantanen picks it up who’s going to pay him 14M given how he’s looked away from MacKinnon so far
Maybe no-one, but to suggest he's going to Klingberg himself is a bit of a stretch...

People have seen Rantanen play in this league for 9 seasons. And anyone suggesting he has been a product of MacKinnon during all that time is crazy.

If Carolina trades him away what do they exactly trade him for?…..I thought Carolina was making this big push for the playoffs with him - now are they going to basically destroy that push by taking back prospects for him? I can’t see some contender throwing Carolina a playoff performer for Mikko at this point. This is a weird situation that Carolina is in, and yeah their GM super botched this if they gotta deal him away.

I don't get why they trade him. Like you gave up a bunch of assets to try and get that "star" playoff player, only to potentially swap him a month later for less? Commit to the damn trade, and keep pushing to finally get over that playoff hump. If he doesn't re-sign to that big deal that's reportedly being offered, and you still fall short...you've dodged a bullet and can use that $$ elsewhere. Them not winning would show that their current team make-up just isn't good enough

Wonder if Carolina works on extension with a team, to get someone more to their cap preferences.

Somehow as I was typing this, made me think of the devils or Panthers

Mikko+extension+

Meier or Bratt
Nemec

Reinhart

Screw Mikko, just move on Avs. This contract he's going to get is going to be a disaster for someone. If he really got Drai money man that comparison going forward is going to look insanely bad.
