Why would it be a slap in the face? He would be the highest paid winger in hockey unless Marner beat him out this Summer, which is perfectly ok.

The cap rising IMO doesn't necessitate having to pay guys more than they are worth.

Because Panarin signed 6 years ago with an AAV of $11,642,857 under an $81.5M cap. This was 14.29% of the cap.

Alan Walsh thinks the cap could go up to $97M next season and $105M in two years.

14.29% of $97M is $13,861,300.

Offering more than $2M less than that is a bit disingenuous, if you're claiming you were willing to make Mikko the highest paid winger.

$11.75M would be 12.11% of a $97M cap. Big difference from Panarin's 14.29%.

$12.6M would be 12.99% of a $97M cap. This would have been perfectly reasonable and it sounds like Mikko was willing to take it.

Especially when Nate signed for $12.6M, it was a much bigger percentage of the cap at 15.09%.

Even Pastrnak signed for less than Panarin even though he signed 4 years after and with a salary cap that was 2M higher.

There are so few wingers that are in the Pastrnak/Rantanen/Marner etc tier. That’s why to me, it’s illogical to say that they all need to be around the same cap %.

Pasta signed his $11.25M deal under an $83.5M cap. This was 13.47% of the cap.

If Walsh is correct and the cap goes up to $97M, then 13.47% of that would be $13,065,900.

You could shave about half a million off that and get to $12.6M. This would be a lesser contract in terms of percentage than Panarin, Pasta, Nylander, EP, and soon to be Marner, Kaprizov, and probably others.

Nylander got 13.07% of the cap. EP got 13.18%. Mikko is better than both.

Horror movie discussion!?

I think there are a lot of new horror movies that are good-to-very good. Off the top of my head, Barbarian (2022), Smile (2022), and The Invisible Man (2020) were all effectively scary without making you lose your lunch (some gore, but nothing excessive). Going back a little further, It Follows (2014) is a stone cold classic.

Anyway... go Avs!

I'm not a horror fan per se, but It Follows was f***in' great.

Midsommar was phenomenal as well but maaaaaan I was so drained after watching it.

What possible risks and benefits/real world consequences would CMac and the Avs have from engaging in that honest conversation with Mikko?

If they were actually interested in signing him, they could have gotten closer to each other's numbers with an honest conversation.

The approach they took, meant they were playing hardball with a lower number, which meant Mikko's agent needed to play hardball with a higher number.

This may have resulted in the Avs thinking Mikko wouldn't sign for less than $13M+. Which sounds like it wasn't true, Mikko said he didn't need more than Nate at $12.6M.

But I'm not really convinced the Avs honestly wanted to re-sign him. I think they might have already decided they'd use his cap hit to spread around the lineup. Which arguably makes sense, especially given Cale's pending raise.

In which case, an honest conversation would have been about giving a core player and fan favorite, who had been with your team though thick and thin for 10 years, and helped you win a Cup, the respect he deserves IMO.

Two things can be true. The 11.75 offer can be seen disrespectful when put into league wide context of the winger market. And it can also make sense for the Avs not wanting to go over that number.
