Confirmed with Link: [COL, CAR, CHI] Rantanen-Hall to CAR, Necas-Drury-25 2nd-26 4th to COL, Chi 25 3rd to Chi (Ret 50% on Mikko)

Mikko's interview is pretty interesting after the Canes game yesterday.

You can tell there's genuine shell shock still happening with him. He obviously never expected to be traded and absolutely expected to get a deal done with the Avs in the end.

Definitely makes you think his agent f***ed him over on this one by trying to play hard ball. It really probably was a situation where the Agent was continuing to demand $14M, Avs were in the $11M range(And IMO probably willing to go up to $12M), but the Agent continuing to hold strong at that Draisaitl number forced the Avs hand despite Mikko himself knowing he would have taken below that number if it came to it.

The real reality in this situation is that CMac might very well be as savvy and as cutthroat as the guys in Vegas and Tampa Bay.... Which is an extremely welcomed sign to me. Dont f*** around with this guy.

Yup. As an litigation attorney, I see this a lot. I've seen Plaintff's lawyers blow up good deals all the time for clients by overplaying their hand and asking for too much. Sometimes it works. Most times it doesn't. But as the (defense) lawyer on the other side, sometimes my best negotiating strategy is to say "no", move on and have the client bet on me.. Mikko's agent wagered that the Avs would fold . . . and he lost. And now Mikko gets to ply his trade with the offensive juggernaut also known as the Carolina Hurrcianes.

Trading Mikko Rantanen was the very last thing those guys wanted to do. But Sakic and CMac are running a business, not an XBox roster. And this was a business decision. If it was a hockey decision, they would have played out the string and worried about resigning Mikko in June. But the numbers dictated a business move, not a hockey one. You can't let the guy walk and get nothing for your patience. Good for them. If it doesn't work, then it's their ass, right? That's why they make the big money.

The Godfather was right: it's not personal. It's business. And just like the Godfather, CMac didn't want to talk out of the bathroom in June with just his d#@$ in his hand.

I'm excited to see what Necas will do next to Nate.

The thing is, Mikko wasn't the only one.
No, he wasn’t. He is, however, the first to try it when we can’t even afford to ice the players we already have under the cap. He and his agent have to know the context of the situation, they’re not stupid.

We can’t afford what we have already and they start by asking for a reported $5 mill more…. Don’t back a rabid dog into a corner or you will get bit.

Thank you. Biggest obstacle?

Well…

Rantanen is done. Let’s accept it. The bridges have been burned. Once the free agency offers start rolling in, him and his agent will be swayed by the money. I also doubt the Avs circle back and offer him a deal. We need to move on.

Most importantly, you’re suggesting the exact same team that has been lacklustre all season. The exact same team. From bottom pairing defensemen to 4th line to everything, you’re suggesting the exact same team.

It’s not realistic nor a smart idea to keep the same team. We need new bodies with new sets of motivation and inspiration.

The players can be upset or frustrated all they want, this is their friend, but he put himself in this position by his decisions.
I think Mikko almost put himself in this position by his play. The Avs front office surely has better analytics than we do, and it would be difficult for them not to notice that the stats back up the eye test for the past 3 years--this is a player who up to 2022 consistently had above average results defensively, go to an awful defensively player.

And where do you think the effort levels will do after signing a $100M contract coupled with aging curve effects?

I think complacency is a good word for it, and then some of it is simply that it's a big guy getting older.

But weren't we on a roll a few weeks ago? With a team that were not yet "finalized" for the playoffs.

What are the bottom row figures, total team average without counting MacK and Mikko?
Interesting to note that Mikko was 4% worse than team average xGF% when without MacKinnon. It's true that Mikko probably faces stiffer competition than the average skater, but also gets way more O-zone starts

Mikko signs with Dallas in free agency.

I’ve been saying that for a while. No insider information, just a hunch. I think they covet him and he’d like to be there.
No state income tax and a bunch of fellow Finns? Sounds about right

CMac has shown several times before that with UFA's he has his number and is comfortable sticking to it.

Rantanen on a Finnish interview: (translation by me)
"I was ready to take a deal below my market value."

Then on a question about the media coming to the conclusion that his ask was too high for Colorado:
"I don't think that's correct. I don't want to talk about specific sums, but I was ready to go below my market price. That's why the trade came as a surprise."

"I honestly didn't believe I would get traded. I strongly believed that we'd re-sign at some point, but they chose otherwise."

"I'm not sad. It's time to look forwards."
Let the media war begin

"Necas has been awesome.....he's looked unreal......his speed.....he's a great passer......it's fun to play with him for sure"

That's just for @forsbergavs32

He also mentioned the sad and sucky situation just for @RoyIsALegend :DD

Good, sounds like he got out what he needed to yesterday and is moving on

Too early to make one for one comparisons between Mikko and Necas, but....Necas can flat out fly. And I know one thing: he's different than Mikko. And different is good. The PP looked energized.

CMac knew the team needed a jolt. But instead of the chest paddles, he hooked up the jumper cables to the friggin' Die Hard and applied them directly to Nate's gonads.

If this is the Necas we're getting, I'm feeling a lot better about this.
