Knee-jerk reaction:
- I wonder how Mack feels
- my feels on Rantanen are well documented, there's no way I'm paying him 13M+
- can't believe McFarland's balls
- why does Chicago do this
- always thought Rantanen and Carolina was a good fit, was hoping for Jarvis+ in the off-season
- wouldn't surprise me if Rants wins a scoring title just to say F-you (followed by many years of lackluster play)
- another move incoming
-probably writes off this season but extends the window

It's not, though. Since when does a pending UFA net you the 11th leading scorer in the NHL (who isn't an immediate pending UFA) a young bottom-6er with upside who's always been highly praised, and a 2nd and 4th round pick?

The value is actually more than the majority of us here realistically expected

Jesse clearly has no idea what the cap is and how it works.

Not at all shocking. If Rantanen was willing to sign for what he's worth, like under the 29 cap, he'd been signed. Not sure what he is going to make next year but I'm extremely glad we didn't pay it.

96 was a very important piece for a long time and we don't win a Cup without him. However it was clear he wasn't going to sign here for a price even remotely ok.

I hope he has success the rest of his career, but I'm really glad we didn't cave to his and his agents demands. Now it's up to CMac to build the team with the extra money he will save from not paying 96 big bucks.

If you weren't going to pay him what he wants, you gotta get something for him. Cannot afford to let him walk for zilch. No way you send him to a Western Conference team unless the deal is phenomenal. So that'snot going to happen.

Love Mikko. But not at $14 M. And he was NOT playing like a $14 M player. No way. It hurts but...welcome to cap era sports. Nothing lasts forever.

Looking forward to watching Necas. As well as the inevitable next trade. They're not done.

Lots more to this. No way does MacSakic do this without running it by Bednar and Nate first. Maybe Cale. Which should tell us something.

I'm guessing Mack, Lando and Makar were spoken to about the trade and signed off on it

Yeah, I love Mikko but he can get his 14 mil elsewhere. We're already in cap hell and that would put a fork in this team.

I'm going to choose to be optimistic.. We have two runs at 6.5M with a player 9 points behind Mikko who just turned 26 January 15th.

Most even superstar UFAs don't return that.

When it's close to guarantee that Rantanen will re-sign there.

Probably closest to the Huberdeau for Tkachuk trade, where Huberdeau only had a year left on his contract. Teams make these trades when they're confident they can re-sign the player - I'm sure they've had some talks with Rantanen's agent and they didn't immediately nix the idea of re-signing in Carolina.

I am having the absolute worst time of my life right now - this is such cherry on the top stuff. Thank you life. You've totally kicked my balls into submission.

Mate, I think this is a very negative perspective!

Martin Necas is an unbelievable player and more importantly human being. I think he’s one of the best Avalanche of all-time!

Jack Drury is immediately one of the best bottom 6 centres we have ever had and just a swell guy all around!

Those 2nd and 4th round picks are likely to turn out better than Mikko Rantanen anyways!

I’m shocked by your take. In my opinion, this even further cements the Avs as the best team in the league for many, many years to come!

And the Avs traded him for a guy that is 11th in scoring on a team with less top end offensive talent
Again, I’m not saying Necas is not gonna produce in Colorado, but I would have traded Mikko for a 2nd line center and a D instead of a winger and 4th line center. That’s my issue with this trade. This leaves us with glaring holes again on the roster, and we trades a future hall of famer

I think this was a good point from someone. Read it elsewhere.

Necas was the leading scorer for the Canes. They are one of the best teams in the league.

We got pretty good player back.
