Rantanen is the 3rd best player on this team and they couldn't afford to pay him 14M/year and keep some kind of depth to stay competitive. Also Makar's contract is up in a couple of years.

Kyper reported that the gap was 1-1.5M. The number Rantanen camp has been looking for on an 8 year deal was somewhere around 11.75-12.5M per. The number 14, which everyone is referencing to, is what the agent has been using on the open market number. Because there is no f***ing way that Carolina is paying him 14M, and 14Mx8 would translate to something like 16M on a 7 year UFA deal. Do you seriously think the Rantanen camp is expecting that?

I really don’t give a praticular crap about what insiders have speculated. I don’t believe necessarily that we low balled or that Mikko is a greedy player looking for 14+M.

I’m saying that if the sides were only 1M or so apart, that’s a deal that gets done. That’s logical to me. What the actual numbers were, no one knows. Kypreos has mentioned Mikko wants 12-12.5. EF is saying he wants the Draisaitl contract.

Maybe he signs for 11x8 and we’ll all scratch our heads wondering what happened.

Maybe he signs for 13.8x7 with massive signing bonuses and full NMC.

Avs didn't want to become the leafs 2.0. We tried it the past couple of years, but you need depth to win. It doesn't matter how good your superstars are if they are paid 12m+ and you have 3 or more. The math just doesn't add up with the salary cap, even with the cap increasing. Also Mikko has been giving a half ass effort and gliding around the past 2 years

I don’t think anybody really cares what he signs for anywhere else. All we know is his request from the Avs was in the neighborhood of 14M.

Regardless of what he eventually signs for somewhere else, as of January 24th his cane refused to come down off a number around 1.5M more than what Mackinnon makes in a deal that kicked in last season. Thats enough to say see ya and I don’t blame the Avs.

Agreed. We have all be clamoring for depth...our injury issues necessitate it...but these are the hard choices. If Mikko makes 12.25, that is 2/3 of a second line or a whole 3rd line if the cap is managed properly. Again, tough choices. For all we know, Mikko gets injured, and the Canes lose out. It's all a complete gamble.
