Neutral fans takes are pretty funny in this thread.

I went to the Sabres board to tell them if both players reach their potential, they got the better asset. The Avs needed Mittlestadt much more this season, and there were very few legit 2Cs available. There is a lot of urgency for the Avs because of their upcoming cap crunch, they needed to go on another run now. They got a great young player to fill a hole to go for a Cup run. I don't think if Byram hits his potential and they 'lose' this trade they care too much with that context.

So many posters here are always so concerned about asset management, but Cup windows are real and they are short. That's why you have to make some tough decisions and go all-in.

I think almost every Avs poster wants to see Byram succeed. I think a few of us knew all along he still had 'it' and his performance was mostly attitude related. Guy is a great player, but the reality is he just wouldn't be allowed to do what he is doing on the Sabres with the Avs. They have completely let him off the leash, and so far it's working. Is that a bad decision by the Avs management/coaching staff? Probably, especially if you were shopping him.

But at the end of the day the Avs want to play super structure hockey and simply put Toews and Girard were just far superior to Byram in that this season in an Avs sweater. Bo might put up silly numbers with the Sabres, but they may still lose many of their games. It will be more interesting to see what happens if/when the Sabres ice a competitive team with a competent coaching staff how Bo's stats look. It seems they are treating the situation right though and by then he should be a much mature player with the confidence and swagger playing top-pair minutes.

How Mitts performs in the playoffs will truly write the story on this trade, as that is where Bo shined his brightest.

Kudos to the Sabres staff for buying low on the type of guy that is rarely available, even if it was already a position of strength

Avs fans don't think that they will be able to re-sign him. He would be a decent UFA pickup for the Sabres at 2M or so. Still youngish, fast, physical, tough, good defensively and PK...will make them harder to play against.
Gonna have to see if LoC and Landeskog situation.

He is one of my top UFA wants for the summer but I figure he has a good playoff and some team will pay him more than I am comfortable paying.

Anywhoo... this trade seems to have worked out for both teams looking at very early returns. It'll be interesting to see how they both progress but initial "win win" seems like a safe assessment.

Was honestly just thinking the same about Sabres fans, classy bunch because normally these threads devolve quickly.

You guys have been nothing but rational and informative about the Middlestadt's game. I think this trade benefits both teams and I'm stoked to see Byram playing well so far.
Just wait until Mittelstadt starts with the clutch goals. He has it in him.

Glad both sides are happy.

Isn't O'Connor out until next year? (Random ADHD thought, not about signing anyone or such, just thought I heard that on Marek the other day.)
Ya he might be cap casualty if he doesnt recover well cause its a hip surgery. Might sit him all next year.

Not as good as Dahlin. But better than Power currently, though with a similar ceiling
You’re not going to think that much longer about Byram and Power. There will be a noticeable gap.

Mitts playing a nice game for the Avs again. He’s good defensively. Nice poise on the puck. Nice finish on his goal. Heavy wrister. I like him. He’s really improved our 2nd line.

This is the time where people are going to offer their outlandish takes after a pretty reasonable discussion.

This trade is the definition of a win-win. Byram has a higher ceiling and still a decent floor, but we won’t really know what type of player he develops into for another 2-3 years and Buffalo gets more competitive. Similar to Chabot where he’ll put up loads of points when there’s little structure, but his offense will decrease once there’s more structure. However, I think Byram will have a lot less bad habits than Chabot does once he’s in his prime.

Mittlestadt has the perfect opportunity on the Avs and I don’t think he’s reached his ceiling yet. He doesn’t have the same potential, but frankly the Avs need a #2C, not another #1C. The Avs window is now and Casey helps that, plus he’s young enough to fit in for the rest of the contending window and the Avs can afford him (barely).

Yep. Both teams essentially dealt from a position of strength to fill a need elsewhere. Good chance it works out quite well for both teams.

It’s great to see Byram in bloom. Kid has exceptional talent. Bo looks very happy in Buffalo. Many Avs fans are happy for him.

And his agent is happy for signing Byram for just two years.

That kid will score 20+ goals next season. RFA again at 23. $$$$

Check out Byram vs Seider tonight. Look at how dominant Byram was. Bo Just killed Mo in every statistical way possible. On this new, below average Sabers team he’s never played or really practiced with. Get used to this.
