Coyle shows up every third or fourth game. You’ll often find him coasting or going through the motions. Glad he’s gone and hope he does well for you guys.

This is a great pickup by the Avs. Hope they can resign Coyle this summer. He did well in Boston as a top 2C and he's even better as a high end #3C. Him and Nelson instantly address the Avs weakness down the middle.
Coyle has another year on his contract. Nelson is a UFA this summer.

Coyle vs JG Pageau: Similar salary. Pageau is one year younger and better stats on many levels this year. He has also performed well in the postseason. All in all, fairly similar value I believe.

With that in mind, how how is this (Mittlestadt trade) not a deal that Lou would consider? Isles get younger up the middle, get a valuable pick and a prospect. Lou was already on the phone with Colorado so maybe they discussed other deals and Lou said no?

I am so done with Lou. I can’t wait until our franchise has him in the rearview mirror.

Perhaps Lou had less interest in Mittelstadt/Zellers, or perhaps Colorado simply preferred Coyle who is the bigger and more physical player. Coyle also has an extra year on his deal, does JGP? Edit: he does. So probably the other reasons

Agree on your assessment.

If the Avs had no interest then I completely get it. From an Isles perspective, JGP is not the player he was two years ago, though I believe he still has value, albeit at a fairly high AAV.

Going into this season most Isles fans would have pegged Pageau at neutral value. He’s had an ok year but a return like this for a team that needs to get younger and get more assets to either develop or trade is a no-brainer. Theoretically, Mittlestadt could have even been flipped once again in the off-season if Lou didn’t care for him that much.

But then, there’s Lou.

Ritchie + first + Zellers + Byram + second.

For 100 games of Coyle, 20 of Nelson. And I guess they got 80 games of Mitteljost - 20 of which were good.

That's the price you pay when you draft like crap with your first round picks. If Jost or Newhook had turned into decent Cs they don't have this ghastly trade tree.

The Aves may get a deep playoff run out of it but the assets they've burned will haunter them for a generation.

This trade is pretty much assuming that Mittelstadt has negative value. Is that true? It might be. But I don't see Coyle as any serious upgrade.
That's incorrect.

A good comparable is the Bjorkstrand trade. Including Gourde it was two 1st's and a 2nd, which given that Gourde is a rental breaks down to a 1st for Gourde and a 1st + 2nd for Bjorkstrand.

Coyle and Bjorkstrand both have a year left at similar caphits, and have similar pedigree on the ice. So their price should be similar, though Coyle plays the premium center position so you'd expect his price to be a bit higher.

So in that light you have 1st + 2nd as Bjorkstrand's value, and 1st + 2nd + midround pick/prospect as Coyle's value. So effectively Mittelstadt is equivalent to the 1st round pick, and then Zellers is the extra asset since Coyle's value as a center is more than a winger.

Which when you think about it makes sense. Mittelstadt was one of the only centers on the market and there were numerous teams rumoured to be interested, like NJ, Anaheim, Toronto, etc. Even with his down year there was surely a team offering a late 1st for him given his age and how few centers are available.

CMac could have traded Mittelstadt for a 1st with maybe a small plus, but instead he preferred to use him to get Coyle who is the perfect 3C for the Avs and has another year of term.

Coyle is a big center who plays a heavy game while still skating pretty well. He's also a good PK'er and a RHS which the Avs needed in their bottom 6. He also put up 60 points as recently as last year whilst Pageau's career high is 43.

Coyle is pacing for 29 points and Bjorkstrand for 50 points.

Coyle's contract carries more risk because of age (33 vs 29), especially in light of how much Coyle's game tanked this year.

Your opening premise equating Coyle and Bjorkstrand invalidates your whole post.

Put it this way, the fans that watched him every day assumed the Bruins would have to pay to get rid of the Coyle contract.

In fairness, he was the player that gave off the most "do enough to get my paycheck" vibes this season, and its possible on a better team in a new situation he will pick it up.

All true. (But no one could have predicted that Mittelstadt simply forgot how to play hockey..... )

But I dont give a f*** what will hunt us for a "generation" if we win another cup this year.

Our window is allready getting smaller and its now "all or nothing"....And the fact that we suck at drafting even closes our window faster.....
