Coyle shows up every third or fourth game. You’ll often find him coasting or going through the motions. Glad he’s gone and hope he does well for you guys.

This is a great pickup by the Avs. Hope they can resign Coyle this summer. He did well in Boston as a top 2C and he's even better as a high end #3C. Him and Nelson instantly address the Avs weakness down the middle.
Coyle has another year on his contract. Nelson is a UFA this summer.

Coyle vs JG Pageau: Similar salary. Pageau is one year younger and better stats on many levels this year. He has also performed well in the postseason. All in all, fairly similar value I believe.

With that in mind, how how is this (Mittlestadt trade) not a deal that Lou would consider? Isles get younger up the middle, get a valuable pick and a prospect. Lou was already on the phone with Colorado so maybe they discussed other deals and Lou said no?

I am so done with Lou. I can’t wait until our franchise has him in the rearview mirror.

Perhaps Lou had less interest in Mittelstadt/Zellers, or perhaps Colorado simply preferred Coyle who is the bigger and more physical player. Coyle also has an extra year on his deal, does JGP? Edit: he does. So probably the other reasons

Agree on your assessment.

If the Avs had no interest then I completely get it. From an Isles perspective, JGP is not the player he was two years ago, though I believe he still has value, albeit at a fairly high AAV.

Going into this season most Isles fans would have pegged Pageau at neutral value. He’s had an ok year but a return like this for a team that needs to get younger and get more assets to either develop or trade is a no-brainer. Theoretically, Mittlestadt could have even been flipped once again in the off-season if Lou didn’t care for him that much.

But then, there’s Lou.

Ritchie + first + Zellers + Byram + second.

For 100 games of Coyle, 20 of Nelson. And I guess they got 80 games of Mitteljost - 20 of which were good.

That's the price you pay when you draft like crap with your first round picks. If Jost or Newhook had turned into decent Cs they don't have this ghastly trade tree.

The Aves may get a deep playoff run out of it but the assets they've burned will haunter them for a generation.
