Coaching is a serious problem.

Tony Marinaro on his french radio show this morning has been talking about Marty's body language behind the bench. He said he often looks deflated and defeated. And it's not the kind of body language you want your players to see the coach have during a rebuild.

And it is true that MSL does this often.

Contextually this was after the refs made the terrible call after letting 3 blatant NJD penalties go.

Brunet was talking about how few pass completions we have through the neutral zone the worst in the league by a very wide margin.
We claim to be a team who wants to play fast but we either skate the puck or try a stretch pass to an isolated forward.
Where is the offensive genius in that is that the best we can do?

I noted how Hughes who three or four times found himself alone in space decided to circle or pass back to rebuild the play.
The Devils rarely attempted solo attacks and were often able to rebuild without having to retreat behind their net.
There is something to be said for keeping the play tighter to the bench when changing forwards.

Even if we execute MSL's game plan I really don't see how decent hockey is going to come out of it.
Going by Laval, the Habs aren't even playing how they are supposed to be playing structurally. It's like every players think they are a generational offensive talent who doesn't need the others instead of playing as a team.

I feel sorry for the poor chap that gets to replace MSL...

In this instance yes. But he does have that kind of reaction for other reasons than the refs. However, Marinaro isn't saying Marty should get fired. He's openly said that he is a fan of MSL as he coach. He does say that he needs an experienced coach next to him. Obviously, we all say this.

Also, in the morning show, they were talking about an interview Kent Hughes gave in the off-season where he was asked what is something he believes Marty needs to improve on. Kent said he needs to delegate more. In other words, he is taking it all on his shoulders.

Yes he should have had an experienced assistant once Richardson left.. now it's hard to get one in there, if they do, it has to be a unilingual guy that isn't seen as a potential successor.

No way they can put someone behind the bench that would get calls to replace Marty, it'd be a powder keg that would blow way too quickly.

The problem is that Habs are often stuck in their own zone because the other team is able to get a successful cycle going. So Habs players are exhausted from extended shifts and then clear the puck, and the other team comes right back.

And the other problem is that when Habs do get a cycle going, it doesn't last long because someone either fumbles the puck or is easily neutralized and the puck is back out.

Firing MSL and picking next up on the roulette wheel of the same old francophone coaches is a Bergevin bandaid fix. The rebuild will take time. This is a team with inexperienced defencemen, two AHL caliber goalies, and a handful of grossly underperforming forwards. A fresh coach may get a few wins out of the gate as a fresh face, but it will be the same bunch of losers eventually.

I expect Lane Hutson to be quarterbacking the 1st PP. Unless you're literally blind I don't see how that isn't an obvious play. The ice time allocation and lines still make 0 sense. No players aside from CC are improving, MSL has 0 experience coaching pro hockey. Stop defending the indefensible
Have you read my message ? I am one of the most critical person vis a vis MSL.

This thread was never supposed to be about Marty getting fired but somehow that sentiment managed to creep in... go figure.
I was pleased when we hired Grillo because it showed Marty was in touch with reality and knows he needs to get better.

What bothers me now is he's becoming delusional if he thinks what we are seeing is going to lead anywhere close to us flipping a switch.
Brunet said it last evening and Hartley said it again today New Jersey played shit Markstrom was actually worse than Sam.

Analysts have been complaining about the lack of structure for two seasons now how long can this go on because it isn't going to work.
Something is terribly broken on this team and listening to all the excuses people are coming up with is almost laughable.

I would let go Robidas. A new voice is needed on defense with more experience that can change and tweak our system a bit, and who would really mind if Robidas's gone ? Our coverage is atrocious at the time, and it's always in the middle of our D-Zone where we need to switch from zone to man coverage that things break down.

We don't pressure the point, there is too much room given and it makes it easier for the opposition to generate chances.

Yet Habs are the winningest Cdn franchise in playoffs over that period and by a country mile since inception of salary cap
I don't think you can say by a country mile ... The Habs have 56 playoff wins and one finals appearance since the inception of the cap in 2005. Edmonton has 52 wins and two finals appearance, Canucks have 52 wins and a finals appearance and more than likely, one of them will pass the Habs this year.

Other than that, it all means nothing.

I think it’s zone coverage that’s killing our team defence. Whenever the opposing team gains the offensive zone and starts moving the puck, our guys are completely confused on who they’re covering. Like it’s just astronomically bad. It reminds me of watching peewee players just chasing whoever has the puck.

That's exactly what they do when the opposition cycles the puck, great analogy. We have witnessed 2 minute shifts of our players gassed from simply chasing the play lol, teams even change on the fly with possession in our zone.

Also, what happened to the promise of high tempo hockey? I see most of them dumping the puck and no physical forecheck and speed in attempts to regain it. There is very little if any neutral zone pressure and our young defenders are being exposed and it isn't just because they are inexperienced. There are serious flaws and overall, the team looks worse than last year.

They spend so much time chasing in their end when they do retrieve the puck they have no gas left to go on the attack. This horrible D zone strategy (lol) is impacting the offense as well.

All we heard was they would be organically better plus Dach is back, blah blah. This team is worse than last years even though they added talent (lane and Dach) because it doesn’t compete like they did last year and it isnt well coached or ready to play.
