Reports have indicated that Clowe would be okay just being a rental. Why would he force DW's hand to make it to a team who will give him the best contract after? He can just test free agency and get more money that way I'd assume.

From Clowe's perspective, a bird in hand may be better than two in the bush. He may have more bargaining leverage with teams more anxious to acquire him. It is highly unlikely that he will be the #1 FA forward in the off-season. Being #1 or #2 gets the big payday. Agents really push for the best deal and that means term more often than $ or a total $ package rather than yearly salary. We all saw what Clowe's agent did to DW on the last go round. Pretty much a Shark among agents.
