Competing house shows in somewhat close proximity. Less than a year later, Raw and Nitro both were airing near other in Virginia. Google says those two arenas were less than 20 miles apart. That was the notable episode when DX invaded Nitro.

In one of the A&E WWE specials, when McMahon OK's the idea someone said ... but what if WCW sends some of their guys here? Vince goes "well... then we'll have all the wrestlers on our show and they won't have any... which show would you watch?"

I am super para phrasing this.

I found full episodes of Sunday Night Heat on YouTube and have been watching them and taking a nostalgia trip back to when I first started watching the attitude era (we got cable in October of 1998).

One thing that's leaping out to me is that Jim Cornette is just a world class color commentator. On some random tag match he's putting over all four competitors like this Sunday night heat means something, praising D'Lo Brown for working his way up from Nation flunky to two-time European champion, and how X-Pac has overcome his lack of size, etc. It really puts them all over. He'll be off the broadcast by early 1999, which I understand he couldn't wait to get off the road and help start up OVW, but I think he was a great, great commentator and worked really well with a young Shane.

Also, being that I was 11 at the time, I did not appreciate Debra McMichael enough. Wowzers.

Coming up on Backlash 2004

aka Orton vs Foley. All timer. Looking forward to it

Some of these earlier JBL promos are absolutely WILD. The video of him “ambushing illegal immigrants” at the border and getting named GM Kurt Angle’s American of the year because of it 😭😭

There really was a stretch where they were like “JBL go be as racist as possible” and I gotta say it f***in worked. Nuclear heat. I’m at the point where he caused Eddie Guerrero’s mom to have a heart attack

As much as I didn't care for the JBL character, credit where it's due. Bradshaw/WWE got one over on regular fans and the smarks with JBL. He managed to generate cheap heat with regular fans while also generating what the smarks thought was go away heat, but really they got duped into tuning in every week to hopefully see him lose

That JBL chair shot on Eddie at judgement day 2004 was f***ing wild

They don’t let them bleed like that anymore

Wow I forgot that was far from the only unprotected chair shot In that one, this took a couple years off the life of both of them

Speaking of Sunday Night Heat, as a kid I loved watching the live version just before a PPV bc I wanted to see what the set design looked like. And I remember the 2002 Survivor Series one where they deliberately made sure they didn’t show the Elimination Chamber on TV. The good ole days haha

I have entered the Kenzo Suzuki era

He was initially going to be the top heel on RAW and would have been known as Hirohito, the grandson of the Japanese emperor during WWII. And he was seeking revenge for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Not even joking look it up. Vince is a maniac. Kenzo and his wife had to tell him that was an awful idea lol

I've got this match one of several old joshi compilation tapes I traded for back in the late 90's. I hadn't thought about this match in forever. Definitely going to dig that tape out and pop it in... now to remember which number it was. Also makes me want to revisit Big Egg Wrestling Universe and All-Star Dream Slam. I think I got those in the same trade.

It’s finally happening, WWE is releasing uncensored full matches with blood on their channel. With their move to Netflix in 2025, they are pushing old matches uncensored.

Manami Toyota was awesome. Her hair makes everything look about 20% better in terms of impact too.

Oh hell yes !!!!!! I'm definitely going to watch this show. :thumbu:

from cagesideseats.com:

Old-school wrestling fans and those interested in the genre’s history will want to mark their calendars and set their DVRs for August 8, as PBS is set to premier an exciting new wrestling documentary.

Mid-Atlantic Gateway, a website dedicated to the history of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, shared the news on social media:

Completed in 1952, Dorton Arena was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2002. Located at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, Dorton Arena has hosted numerous concerts and events and is notably famous as the home of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance. It’s where Rowdy Roddy Piper defeated “Nature Boy” Ric Flair to win the NWA United States Championship in 1981.

When Giants Walked Here features commentary from familiar faces like wrestler George South and announcer David Crockett, mainstays of Jim Crockett Promotions. It’s currently unclear if the documentary will air outside PBS North Carolina. In the past, other PBS channels have uploaded their films to YouTube, with St. Louis’ Head over Heels: Remembering Wrestling at the Chase being the most notable.

I was under the impression it was only going to be on the North Carolina PBS station
