Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Yeesh, that's rough lol, I'm finally getting the hang of dodging (parrying still eludes me) but I still put pictos that add HP and DEF to my main three
Yeah, crazy how tight that parry window is. But with it being such a powerful thing, I get it.

Only thing I don't like so far is the exploration. Seems like everywhere off the beaten path is a "danger" dungeon. Game is flawless otherwise

Decided to actually play through it, and while I do think it's quite good so far, storytelling-wise, one thing I would consider a notable flaw at this point is that:
While Gustav's death was well done, I think that the choice to immediately replace him with another male protagonist, as well as the moment in which that happens, was very cheesy and had my eyes rolling. It doesn't help that most of the primary male characters in this game so far have a pretty similar look. The Verso moments that follow that aren't too bad, but I feel like they could have done a much better job of more organically and gradually introducing him in a way that feels more natural and that would make him more intriguing rather than lame/corny/shoe-horned.

Another thing that negatively contributes to that feeling for me is the choice of having affection/romance options for Verso to choose between Lune and Sciel. It gives off this "oh, the main main character HAS to be a cool dude that serves as wish-fulfillment for boys (even though we care/know the least about him at this point)" feeling that I'm not a fan of. Ideally, I think he would function better as strictly a supporting character at this point (that potentially becomes important later). I understand that both of these things may not stay that way, but still.

Finished the main story tonight.

Easily one of the best written games i've played in a long time. The entire story is essentially one long, drawn on debate with how one deals with grief, but the amount of shit they show you earlier in the game and then manage to tie pretty much every strand together at the end is incredible.

GOTY and i don't think it'll be particularly close. Rare for a game to deliver on both story and gameplay at such a high level.

Just started playing the other day. Spent like 45 minutes trying to beat the first optional boss in Spring Meadows. Frustrating as hell being one shot killed and having to be perfect with the dodges/parries but finally pulled it off. Can see why it's getting all the hype, very engrossing game already.

Broke down and bought it digitally. I’m really loving the battle system, but I think the coolest and most nostalgic thing for me so far is that it has an old school overworld.

This is the one of the most nostalgic games I have played in a very long time.

  • Overworld map -pick an RPG
  • Travel mode (including flying) -pick an RPG
  • Turned based combat -pick an RPG
  • Timing attacks, dodges and parries -Super Mario RPG, Legend of Dragoon
  • Going into an area and seeing a bigger view of the map so you know you're not really there to do anything there yet/if ever -Star Ocean 2nd Story
  • Learning skills through gear and equipping them -Final Fantasy 7,8, 9 etc
  • Confusing story -pick an RPG
  • Party member dying -pick an RPG
  • Fighting against a god(s) -pick an RPG
  • FANf***INGTASTIC music -pick an RPG
  • No quest markers, no quest log, NO QUESTS! aside from the main quest lol. Just doing things because. -Final Fantasy 1
This game made me feel like I was a child again and I'm excited to beat New game plus.

PS. I am old now and I played on Story mode. Fight me.

So satisfying to be underleveled against an optional boss like the Chromatics, get your ass kicked for 30 minutes before perfecting all the parry timing and beating them.

Agreed. I attempted Chromatic Abbest at level 3 and got destroyed. Came back at level 14 thinking I’d destroy it, it took 89 successful parries to take him down 🤣

I must've spent at least 10-15 hours toiling away in the endgame due to the inevitable grief I knew I'd be feeling by completing the story, and boy was I was right. It's one of those games that, to me, feels like it transcends media. Movies, TV, games, books...it's one that is going to stick with me for a very, very long time and has easily cemented itself as one of my favorite games of all-time. The developers should be incredibly proud of what they've accomplished.

Since the Collector's Edition had sold out quickly during the initial pre-order phase, they're now taking pre-orders on them again, just without the game. Looks to be open preorder so no worries about not being able to do it right away. It'll close June 12th, so people have a decent amount of time to get one in. Looks like they'll ship in January of next year.

Really awesome of them to do this.

Only downside of taking on all the optional bosses as soon as possible is that the story bosses seem so easy in comparison. I keep seeing references to the Dualliste fight and it really wasn’t that memorable for me.
