Manning does like to take some chances on O, but hopefully he will not make the disaster reel that often.

Sometimes a fresh start is good for everyone. Again, one of the main reasons folks didn’t like him in Philly is because they felt he was blocking the progress of Travis Sanheim and Samuel Morin on D. He will not kill you in the 5/6 D-man role playing 15-17 minutes per game.

Now that I cursed Stan for most of the afternoon, I have regained my senses and I see the plan vs. last years opening night roster:

Kunitz is Bouma's/Kero's replacement - Significant upgrade!

Manning replaces Franson - hmmm OK......

Ward replaces Forsberg/Glass/ Berube - OK this works too.

BUT WE STILL SUCK!

Manning is one of the worst defensemen in the league. He follows the puck rather than defending against the attacking player. He gets caught very often by good passing around the net with him being completely out of the play, which causes open net goals.
Chicago's coaching staff will probably not use him too often when this habit is exposed, not like the dismal head coach of the Flyers. Hakstol over used Manning, especially whenever the Flyers scored and took momentum, Manning would be put into play on the next face off, creating a number of chances by the opponents.
In other words, this is an awful signing by the Blackhawks.

There has to be a couple of trades coming as the Hawks cannot and should not enter the new season with what they have. The defense is still a disaster and no one but Toews to win faceoffs.

With no fourth line checking center signed today, it’s going to be on him to fully fill that role
He did that role in the Hogs playoff run, got more experience there. I know people were questioning why he had no points but that was his play, he eventually got a hilariously soft goal though.

They must have confidence in him to play that role with Chicago, it’s the signal I get from their decisions today.

Same way I think they’re signaling Forsling is set to take over the second pairing LHD spot

If those two things don’t pan out, then I don’t know what the f*** is going on.

It's absolutely assinine to give Manning that kind of money. I mean, where did they get that valuation from?? Braindead...Kempny signed for 2.5m!!!

You would have to guess that the Hawks private internal advanced metrics showed them something that we are not seeing. It does not justify the deal but maybe that is the back story behind it.

Question: if Kempny couldn't get in the ice for Q, is it realistic to think Manning will be Q's type of DMen?

The problem is that Stan's internal advanced metrics appears to be completely different from Q's gut.

I think that’s the sole reason Manning was signed. Zawaski said a few days ago that Q wanted a defensive Dman, and that Stan was going to give it to him.
So this guy is a stay at home DMen. Who will he pair up with? Does he fit our roster long term? Who is a good comp?

Philly fans dont describe him as a stay at home guy at all. They say he pinches way too much... which seemed like part of Kempnys game Q didnt like.

While manning does sound like a guy in the dzone that has more solid play despite still being a play chaser. His pk success looks good and a body to play there and have some edge is likely to get him some defensive usage. He already did have that basically though that team had a lot of time on the dzone.

The same internal advanced metrics where Scuderi is worth Daley and Oesterle is better than Kempny? I puke on their internal advanced metrics then.
