I’m not sure how you’d rather have Greig but you’re entitled to your opinion.
Greig is 22 and hasn’t really shown he’s much more than a bottom6er at this point and I’m not sure with you’d be convinced otherwise.
Kreider is having a bad year along with the rest of his team but is coming off of a 76 point season and still pacing near 30 g this season.
I would NOT pay POSITIVE value for Chris Kreider, it is as simple as that. Would anyone pay positive value for Steven Stamkos right now? No, and he is an HOFer.
Greig hasn't shown that he is more than a bottom-6 forward because that's what he is, but he can be of extremely good quality. A high-end 2-way forward with a complete game on the 3rd line is exactly what I want from him, those are cheap and provide secondary scoring at ES while shutting down the opposition, extremely valuable.
Even if Kreider ends up with 30 goals and 15 assits, I don't want him 2 more years at 6.5 AAV.
Youth is great and all but relying too heavily on it gets you in long term playoff droughts.
I'm not sure if it's directed at Ottawa's rebuild but you have to be aware of many other things before thinking it's a big reason as to why Ottawa has missed the playoffs for years.
- Melnyk decided to go 100% rebuild in 2018, every single player from the 2017 playoffs run (ECF game 7 double OT against the Champs) was traded/gone within 2 seasons. Earth scorching rebuilds are supposed to take time.
- Melnyk wanted a cheap YES MAN, Pierre Dorion was that guy but he had no business being a NHL GM.
- Melnyk passed away in 2022, team was finally sold in September 2023, nothing could be done before this, then they finally fired the DJ Dorion from my avatar, which was clearly holding this team back as they had no business being there. All they did was DAMAGING the team.
Not bringing good quality vets was one of my first complaints about Dorion after the firesale period. Now, they have Giroux, Ullmark, Jensen, etc and brought Perron for that who unfortunately has not been able to contribute this season
