I am going to disagree them not making the playoffs next year means anything has gone wrong or is going wrong.

They have a lot of dead and badly allocated cap space for next year. Unless they can somehow get out of much of it, other than the hopeful natural improvement of the youth/younger, where on the roster are they going to be able to make a sizable upgrade?

You say the bolded almost dismissively, but the rebuild hinges on this happening. All the outside help in the world won't result in a good team if it doesn't. Re-signing Kreider (not that you're advocating that) won't change anything if the youth doesn't improve naturally.

So yeah, we're counting on that... but that's always been the plan.

Nothing dismissive there, the youth I do expect to improve yet for an overall improvement to the roster for next year that improvement would have make up for and exceed the badly allocated cap space elsewhere, and the raises in cap space some players will take up.

And no I am not advocating they extend Kreider.

That's a weird way of looking at it, honestly. The improvements from youth aren't something that needs to overcome cap issues.

Just for example, the Avalanche have like $4.5m in dead cap right now. From your perspective, they're making up and exceeding that badly allocated cap space. But the team would be exactly the same quality even if they had $5m more in dead cap. The quality of the roster is largely independent of the amount of dead cap until you get into contending mode where you're spending to the cap and every little bit of space needs to be used for useful players.

Since that isn’t next year, we shouldn’t be worried about it.

Rangers are slated to have 7,5M in buyout cap hits, then if they keep Smith and Staal that is 10M, and if they keep or buyout Lundqvist another 8.5M or 5M.

We are talking like 23-26M in dead or poorly allocated space, ~28 ~30% of the total cap space.

I agree the Rangers are not in contention so that is not a worry of mine, more so those who believe the Rangers should make the playoffs next year or something has gone wrong, I think they are discounting the competitive disadvantage that amount of poorly allocated cap space will have on them making the playoffs. yet I qualified that with, unless they are able to dramatically lessen that burden somehow, like if any of S&S or Lundqvist are traded (without major retention) or retire.

I think these projections are a bit optimistic considering there is no #1C in the pipeline. Unless you are expecting they sign Barkov in 2022 or trade for Eichel.

Barkov is obviously joining Kakko and Zibanejad and form the Finnish speaking trio at MSG

Zib speaks Finnish? I didn’t know that. Not a lot of people choose to learn arguably the most complex language in the world (which, to boot, is spoken only by a few million).

It's really not a competitive disadvantage if we aren't looking to improve via outside additions.

I thought he was half Swedish half Persian?
Born and raised in Sweden to a Finnish mother and a Persian father.

pretty sure this was a reference to pierre at the draft saying that kakko would get to play with fellow countryman mika zibanejad

What if other playoff vying teams improve via outside additions?

Wouldn't that put the Rangers at a competitive disadvantage as both teams are vying for the playoffs, yet one made improvements via outside additions.

I guess I leave off with, if the Rangers make the playoffs next season, while carrying the amount of badly allocated cap space they are currently slated to, the youth improvement must have been great, which everyone would be happy about. I just would not take them missing them as a sign that anything has or is going wrong.

So much false info about Zbad's heritage just to fit a political narrative. Get it right.

He's half Swedish, half Persian, and half Finish.

I full expect this team to be pushing for the playoffs next season.

A lot of it is going to depend on the progress of Kakko, Chytil and Kravtsov.

I do too. Kakko, Chytil, and Kravtsov are gonna be too good, Panarin and Mika are Panarin and Mika, Shesterkin is Shesterkin, and the D is improving too quickly.

They will be in the legit hunt next year.

Must take this opportunity to get one more elite talent NOW. You won't get another chance.

Silly me, how could I forget.

I think they need another one though.

They should definitely be seeking one, hard.

But if they happen to luck into another elite winger like Lafrieniere or Holtz, well, I think they can make do with Chytil and Zibanejad. They'll be stocked full of elite wings on both sides: Kakko, Kravtsov, Panarin, and Lafrieniere/Holtz. Yikes.

And they'll still have the FOLLOWING years first rounders (2021, etc) and our slew of D prospects to try to find top-6 center options. What would be stopping us from flipping Nils Lundkvist + for a 22 year old top-6 center?

Trade a few picks and a decent roster player for a solid (sure fire) first line prospect? Thinking Buch and/or Strome and a few seconds or a second and a third for a top tier prospect.

I would say this is overly ambitious (in terms of what we are giving up) if we weren't apparently super close to dealing Buch for 8th overall last year straight up.

That being said I don't think you can count on the aggregate value on guys like Buch and Strome netting you a top 6 player under 23 or 24.
