Rumor: Chris Johnston: Some believe Toronto is the front runner for Ben Chiarot.

Not offended at all. It was a question. I'm wondering why, if the team is all worth 1st+, then why aren't they performing like it?
Why is Chychrun worth a 1st, and two prospects, that team is terrible and he's having a down year. Why was Dzingel traded for 2 2nd and Duclair? Why was Savard traded for a 1st and a 3rd? Why was... you see it's the same every year. That logic is flawed.

Not all Habs fans think the same and that applies to the Leafs too. You know your fan base don't all see things the same right? :sarcasm:

* Toffoli is a value contract and you would say the same if you were us.

* Chiarot was a big part of our top 4D which helped us with playoff series wins in the last two playoffs. The interest in him is legit and that's how values increase at deadlines. Reality.

* Lehkonen? Not sure what his value is. I'd be surprised we get a 1st for him.

* Petry? He returns a 1st even if he is having a down year. Habs probably consider retention ($1M max) to help the other team fit him in.

I agree. Most of our fan bases are way out in left field on most things around here.

Personally I don't think Chiarot is worth a 1st+ but Dubas will probably panic and pay the price.

Trade deadline stuff. Players of target get more than what you might think they are worth. Habs retain 50% for the rest of the year and the team trading for Chiarot gets a guy who eats up 23-25 min a game.

If the Habs didn't beat the Pens, Leafs, Jets, and Knights and we didn't get to see what Chiarot could do in the playoffs, the 1st narrative would not be in play. Reality. However the reality that played out was we did go on those runs and other teams have taken notice at the value he brings. He has ability to raise his game which some can't.

Not even sure if the Leafs 1st will do it. Other teams offering their 1st as well and some other teams might have a better 1st to offer. Hard to say cause none of us know what the actual conversations are.

Leafs are in a tough spot. You are close to winning a cup with the core you have and sitting back hopping for the best is not going to go well.

I'm not trying to interject any logic at all. It was a question. Every Habs player that comes on here in trade proposal starts with a 1st+. My question is simple. If they are all worth a 1st+ then why isn't the team better?

If the team is that terrible why didn't they lose yesterday?

Lol. Good one. Got me there. Only going by the standings man. I'm going to show myself out as you can't possibly have a conversation without just turning to digs.

To be fair though, you were throwing out digs to begin with. "Why are the Habs not winning if everyone returns a 1st". That's a dig even if you try to downplay that.

Anyways, we can put that in the past if you wish and continue on a respectful conversation. I'm assuming you are interested in Chiaort but don't want to pay the 1st? Sounds like what some Flames fans said about Toffoli.

Someone is going to trade for Chiarot and outbid the other teams. Reality is the Leafs are not the only team that could use him.

Because individual players and team play are two different things. You're also looking at a scenario where players are more valuable as they fill a need as a missing piece on a contending team and at a time where prices are inflated.

It wasn't a dig. It was a legit question. I'm trying to understand why a team full of such quality players isn't performing better. You know not every Leaf fan comes on here to start shit. Some are true hockey fans and are just trying to get an understanding of another team.

Found the used car salesmen.
The cap is the only thing holding back the proper value Leafs would have to give for Chiarot. Trade is impossible unfortunately habs can’t be taking on guys like Marner right now. ;)

A first this year and a second next year?

Well you can drop it now. Not everyone we move is going to return a 1st. However, we do have players that can clearly help other teams. It wasn't just Price who took us to the finals. Reality

Two letters. DD.

In reality, if you watch the Habs, you'd notice that we were being held back because of the ineptitude of Ducharme. On top of that, we had MB making the calls, and he was as accurate as the weather man here in Atlanta (which is rarely accurate, btw).

It's amazing to see how much Caufield was hurt by DD's presence and lack of system, or concept. This team does have talent, and we have heart after what we've suffered through the first half of this year.

Do we have the worst record in hockey? Yes. Are we the least talented team in hockey? Absolutely not.

Let's also not forgot how damaging COVID has been to us, and the loss of Weber and Price are two massive holes both on the ice, and off. Not saying Chairot or the other players rumored to be in trades are worthy of that 1st round pick, but we know that the Leaf's window is closing fast...that JT contract is looking worse and worse, your defense is in shambles, and there is a mind gap that seems to be in the locker room when playoffs come around. If you are going to make a run, you have maybe 2 years left to go for it, so if you want help from us with acquiring Chairot, you better pay well for it.

And I don't have any interest in Chiarot. What happened last year and even last night wasn't because of our lack of Chiarot type players. Our problem is how to beat the Chiarot type players. And we have a lot of money tied up in guys that haven't figured that out yet.

Your problem is depth, consistent goaltending, and adding gritty guys that can skate. That's how I see it.

Not sure if Chiarot turns the needle for you guys either. When healthy, who is he playing with? I think Petry fits better (with Muzzin... hopefully not seriously hurt)

It was not just DD, player was just stoping to put any kind of energy + goalie collapse... now its good st-louis its a new thing so every body is happy and want to give a real good look... player playing hard and goalie playing better than what they really are but we will really see stlouis effect in maybe a month when the honeymoon will be over.

CC wasn't playing on the right line, or hell, not even the right side of the ice under DD.

Our PP and PK was minor league at best in tactics, and it showed time and time again. DD left Primeau out there in moments where it could have really damaged the kid's confidence, instead of replacing him with ANYONE else. Listen to the team speak, and you'll see that MSL has new ideas, and ways to motivate this team into playing their asses off, despite being statisically the worst team in the league.

DD was coming off a Stanley Cup Finals run and still couldn't motivate this team, nor play players in a spot for them to succeed. He lost the team, the media, and the fans.

MSL might not be the long term answer, as time will only show, but what he IS showing is the potential we have with a lot of our players.

I think our depth is ok. Maybe a little shuffling of the deck chairs would help.

Bad pinches by the D cause for too many odd man rushes per game. Campbell used to stop them all but he's come back down to earth a bit. No reason for Muzzin and Holl to be passing each other behind the opposing net while the puck is headed back the other way but it's happened way too many times. Sandin is smart and usually makes great pinches but if he's wrong it's an automatic 2 on 1 the other way because he doesn't have the foot speed. Liljegren is still too inexperienced. Lyubushkin will help but he's not a savior or anything.

The unhealthy obsession that the coach and GM have for their pet project that they brought from utter obscurity up to being a top 4 shutdown D. When in reality the guy just isn't good at ice hockey and should've been exposed for the expansion draft.

The overpaid guys disappearing when the game gets a little rough happens way more than it should.

Lots of warts. But I don't think Chiarot is the answer. Certainly not at the asking price.

Never said it was just Price. Against us it was the D. Our answer isn't that we need the Chiarot type players but to learn how to beat the Chiarot type players.

It's deeper than that. Deep playoff teams needs performances in many areas and having a shutdown mobile/physical D is one of them.

I just asked a question. The Habs are at the bottom of the standings. I was trying to find out why, if these guys have such high value in trades, are they so low in the standings. You took that as a dig. It wasn't intended as a dig but as a legit question. Your reply was (paraphrasing) if they're so terrible then why didn't they lose yesterday. The only thing missing from that childish response was the neener neener.

If a Habs fans said on our boards that Chiarot was worth a 1st and prospect (before the media reports came out), they would have been ridiculed on our boards. Not many other fans realize that part but they can't resist throwing jabs at the Habs fan base for going with the reports that are out there.
