Celebrity Death: Chris Cornell

I don't know much about Layne Staley, but yes, Cobain and Weiland had major issues with drugs. Not sure about Cornell when it came to drugs and alcohol. Obviously a lot of musicians have had issues with one or both.

As a kid who grew up in the 90's it's tough knowing those 4 are all gone. I wasn't into Alice In Chains, but they were very popular and I knew people who were fans. Tough day all around.

I'm only 28, so I missed out on these guys in their primes. Though I feel very fortunate to have seen Chris in concert twice, once solo once on their Soundgarden reunion, and Pearl Jam once. God, now Eddie Vedder has to live to like 200 just to make up for all these brilliant artists dying so young.

Glad you got to see him live. I went to see Soundgarden 6 years ago. I remember when they broke up in 1997 and thinking "well, there's one band I'll never get to see live. Too bad."

Low and behold they get back together in 2010 and I'm seeing them a year later. A special night for sure, and one I will always remember.

I'm guessing I saw the same tour, it was around 2010-2012. By far the loudest concert I've seen, and double awesome since QOTSA opened for them too.

Layne had awful drug issues. When Alice in Chains released the Unplugged album that was the first show they had played in like 3-4 years because of his problems.

Oh man, that would have been a great show! I love Queens Of The Stone Age. I saw Soundgarden at a festival called Bluesfest in Ottawa. The Flaming Lips were also playing that night, but I only caught the end of their set. I really just went for Soundgarden.

Really bummed that I never got to see Cornell perform. He stopped by for a solo acoustic show a couple years ago, but I dragged my heels on getting tickets. Just a couple months ago, I looked up Soundgarden's summer touring schedule to see if there was a show I could make.

Staley was pretty much a recluse the last few years of his life, I remember reading reports that he was like 80 pounds when he died. There aren't even any photos of him from like 1999 til his death.

Cornell was just an amazing singer. Soundgarden was a metal band at their core, their first two albums in particular, and he was just great at merging that high range hair metal vocal style with the traditional heavy rock sound like Black Sabbath and Zeppelin, with that grittiness of his voice. I know they were coming out of that Seattle scene but I never really considered them "grunge". Fantastic guitar player and songwriter as well. This ****ing sucks. Got to see them in Toronto with NIN a few summers ago and he was still hitting those notes with ease.

People around that age make up one of if not the largest percentage of males who commit suicide in the U.S. Furthermore, males in their 50s have seen the largest increase in suicides in the past couple of decades. Unfortunately, it's not all that uncommon.

You're absolutely right in that we'll probably never know with 100% certainty, but the fact that his wife had called someone to check in on him makes you think there's something there.

On top of that, men in general are much more likely to commit suicide without warning.

I was luckily enough to have seen them in 2013 literally right across the street from me. I used to work at the venue they played at and I still had friends that were working the show that let me in for free. I just hung out in the back stage area watching it.

Chris was an awesome talent and seemed like a genuinely great person. I have never heard a bad word said about him, not even when they broke up.

Totally sucks.

He did an interview shortly before he died where he pretty much accepted that the end was near and said his band mates weren't his friends anymore. It was a depressing read.

I thought I heard he had been dead for a few days or maybe longer before his body was discovered.

Rusty cage is one of my all time favorite songs. Bringing back some childhood memories of playing road rash on my ps1

A day later and I've been listening to mostly music from Cornell and wishing he had asked for help that he needed, he might still be with us.

Oy.... We're going to be hearing a lot of details about this in the coming days that are really just going to suck.

However, following Soundgarden's concert Wednesday night, Vicky noticed a change in her husband's demeanor when they talked on the phone after the show.

"When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different. When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him," she continued. "What happened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life."

Pasich added that side effects of Ativan include "paranoid or suicidal thoughts, slurred speech and impaired judgment"; Vicky Cornell noted her husband's slurred speech following the Detroit concert in her statement.

....well this doesn't look good for Ativan, to say the least.

You could have a little anxiety, be prescribed ativan and next thing you know you're having suicidal thoughts and acting on them before even having a chance to get lucid and realize you don't actually feel that way.
