Celebrity Death: Chris Cornell

Benzodiazepines are often prescribed for anxiety, people use them for sleep as well. Two conditions not really associated with suicide. And the above statement is assuming he'd get these drugs legitimately. Benzos can be purchased off the street quite easily, and probably are like buying candy for a celebrity Furthermore, they're a quite popular recreational drug as well. It seemed to me that discussion was going in the direction of "the drugs made him do it" (not talking about you) so my intention was to throw a bit of cold water on that.

That was my point as well. At normal doses, this likely doesn't happen.

At doses exceeding the max, maybe. But a link hasn't been established in this particular case either.

I mean... I'm no doctor... and I'm lucky enough to not have to deal with this sort of thing in my life... but... suicidal thoughts as a side-effect to anti-anxiety meds seems rather... contradictory(?).

They're almost always CNS depressants. It's going to provide some calming effect, due to the CNS depression, slowing vitals, reaction time etc, due binding to GABA receptors/increase in GABA, but they can also can affect serotonin (mainly mood) and dopamine (makes you feel good)

It's likely similar to giving ADHD kids Adderall or Ritalin, potentially giving someone whose normal is out of sorts (homeostasis is above/below the normal range), with a drug that produces an increase in the undesired effect causes the body to release neurotransmitters that do the opposite effect, and the person's normal is now 'normal' It's counter intuitive, but that's what happens with stimulants (at therapeutic doses).

There's also potential effects from withdrawal or dependence of a drug too.
