What stinks hearing a lot of bchl - some nahl -other 20 year kids(2004) have been getting decommited . Remember , these are kids were playing in those league because wanted go fo college and now getting tossed like trash by schools - which to my point they should kept in courts to the spring then settle and start next year . scumag move by ncaa but at least they are consistent .

Yeah, that's the biggest short-term down side to this. Kids have planned their entire life around going to college via a hockey scholarship, and they've now lost that. Obviously, this will stop after a year or two, but it's an issue right now. I really feel for those kids.

Better move now is to sign a CHL contract and get guaranteed money to use for College. If player isn't good enough for D1 can use to help pay for D3.

One interesting note on NIL money:

Players are being wooed south of the border with full rides and NIL money, though, as international students, that income is a lot less for Canadians — but still significant — compared to the dough players born in the United States can make.
“These are kids that have never seen that kind of money and it’s suddenly offered to them,” said Forrest. “That’s pretty hard to turn down, plus you’re going to an NCAA league that gets far more exposure to NHL scouts than we do.

NCAA teams can’t back out once a NLI is signed. At that point they are obligated to provide what was agreed upon. Anything prior to this is not binding by any means. The player had as much of a right to walk away from the school than the school did to the player.

This has been a common thing for years. A kid commits at 16-17-18, doesn’t progress the way the school has liked and they are pushed out. Its actually fairly common. Not a scumbag move by any means. And who cares if the players have the right to jump ship the way they have been. Goes both ways.

Yea, however its really late in game to decommit 2004( last year eligibility) which im hearing 80% is simply the rule change with the CHL .

As a follower of both NCAA hockey and the CHL, this seems to be the most likely type of commitment we'll see. Overage CHL'er who has had solid 19 and 20 year old seasons choosing to go NCAA over USports with their academic package. Limited pro or NHL options as they are closing out their junior careers in Canada.

I don't think we'll ever see the mass exodus of top tier talent (as they'll likely be signed to pro NHL deals once drafted).

More kids from the States who were always going to go NCAA will go to the CHL to play their junior eligible years. Look at Chase Reid: was getting boned by Waterloo in the USHL because they wouldn't play him, and thus got stuck in the NAHL, then leaves for Sault Ste Marie in the O and is actually playing and playing well.

PJ Forgione (2004, OHL, Saginaw Spirit) commits to Vermont. Really liked Forgione a couple years ago when watching Saginaw.
He's a steady enough OHL defenseman. Never flashy but he'll hold down the blue line for you. Don't think he's ever going to be a true NHL prospect but I hope he has a nice career at his home state University. Maybe carve out an AHL/European career.

Question from a european who‘s intrested in college hockey for about a year: are top OHL guys who commited like van stessel or Fimis for example expected to be impact players in the NCAA next year?

Should they be impact players next year in the NCAA? Yes. Will they? We'll see, NCAA coaches are notorious for favoring older veterans and many first year NCAA players start slow/down the lineup with limited ice time.

That's going to be a tough question. There isn't a past example to point to. The NCAA is a tougher league to score in. Older, stronger competition. If I had to guess, a PPG 20 year old from the CHL should be able to be at around 0.5-0.75 PPG in their first year. So not game breakers but will certainly add some punch to college rosters.

Coming in at 21 years old, many will have big impacts especially as 24 year old seniors... I personally hate that aspect of this, as I've already hated 21 year old freshmen in college hockey.

It was sort of proposed a few years ago but I think 20 as of June 1 of the upcoming season should be the age limit and anything over that deducts years from eligibility.

And the NCAA going the other way... So these kids could be 25 years old playing college hockey.

It’s a joke. They’ve essentially started going away from it being tied to actually being a student at a college and just looking at it as a minor league for whatever major league there is.

All it’ll do is perpetuate the mediocrity of mid 20’s guys who aren’t good enough for the major leagues in their sport to beat up on and take spots away from actual teenagers who might have a pro future in the sport but need development to get there.

this year freshmen class was :
2003 birthyear( age out ) 231.
2004 birthyear -173
2005 birth year /57
2006 birth year-30
Compare that to the freshman class of the average college student and then you see why it’s a big problem.

NCAA should be for 18-22 year olds, if they are going to be affiliated with these colleges. If not, go affiliate yourself with some professional sports teams.
