UMass isn't quite the very top tier of the NCAA, but they have some very recent titles. And I think Carvel does a better job with developing defenseman than arguably anyone. So if I were a defenseman, like Taillefer, UMass would be one of my top choices.
UMass also in relative close proximity to Taillefer's hometown, basically 4.5 hours away. In regards to Lottin, Nebraska Omaha has recruited a ton of Quebecois lately, so that might be more a pipeline type of commit.

Is there anything binding them to playing in the CHL for four years? If not, then I'm not sure we should be taking it as a given that they "will play" in the CHL beyond the point when they're eligible to move to the NCAA. If these kids were previously willing to forego the CHL altogether to play in the NCAA if it meant one or the other, then it would be reasonable to conclude that the NCAA is a priority for them as compared to the CHL. The fact is that they can't play NCAA now but can play in the CHL, but they will be able to play in the NCAA within a couple of years. We don't know what will happen at that point.

Nothing is binding them but they've both committed to the CHL for 4 years and their respective NCAA choice for 2028-2029. It's just their plan for now.

A player likely to make it to the NHL won't go to the NCAA after the CHL, makes very little sense.
I don't know if that's necessarily true.

There will likely be some players at some point that are likely going to go to the NHL that either move from the USHL to the CHL or move from the CHL to the NCAA.

If for instance the Misa to NCAA for next year rumors happen, that's an example of a future NHL player who will go CHL to NCAA to NHL.

The new rules will be interesting to see how they unfold. The ball is in the NHL’s court as to how they want to proceed with CHL players & their AHL eligibility.

If things stay status quo, the big choice 1st round picks are going to have to make is do they forgo signing an ELC in their D+1 & move up to NCAA. They will likely have to stay there for 2 seasons.

I feel the NHL will also have to level the playing field for how long NHL teams retain rights to North American League prospects. All of this has made these finer details more convoluted for sure. Unless I’m missing something.

The solution is 4 year rights holding period for all prospects that aren't coming out of Russia, where the rights holding period is still "indefinite".

Might just my interpretation on the current AHL eligibility rules. But a lot of D+2 CHL draftees are not eligible for the AHL still. Look at Dumais, Musty, Savoie, etc.

I do feel this change is going to force the NHL to change the AHL eligibility for prospects. They’ve propped up the CHL for ages with this 4 years in the CHL rule for years.

If they go NCAA they might as well let them go to the AHL if they want like all the other college players that sign ELC out of NCAA. In fact I figured that's how the rules will be interpreted.

Some 19 year olds are ready for the AHL, most would benefit from college for a year or two. The ones not ready for either are the longshots to have lucrative pro hockey careers. Best system has all options on the table so individual players can do what's best for them, and not some protectionist and overly paternalistic policy.
