Jack Pridham (2005) going from West Kelowna in the BCHL to Kitchener in the O. Pridham is a Boston University commit
He was on the “add list “ to head to a USHL too but looks chose OHL . As my view is BCHL is hurt by far the most on this . However , USHL will be second hit of the junior league in this new rule . USHL i think already 8-10 really high end kids already and just starting .

Yes, there is a belief that you need to be a really high end student in order to play D-1 sports, and that is simply not the case. Some CHL players may not yet have the required core courses but I would wager that the majority do (just by looking at graduation requirements in Ontario) and that the vast majority of CHL players will be academically eligible to play.

I agree completely, unless a player has little desire for a post secondary education ( and there are those, or those that are looking at the trades....a growing trend among young males today), why would you want to be making 600 dollars a week playing in the ECHL when you can be at a school, among your peers, while earning a degree for free?
The only schools where it remotely matters is the Ivys. You can have an IQ of 10 and most D1's will find a way to get you into the school.

ECHL is pretty dead end, some guys can make the jump ECHL to AHL, but there's always a fresh wave of draft picks to be stored into AHL lineups. Additionally, ECHL teams would rather sign 23 year old college kids as they're more physically developed. The GP breakdown is 50 % Canadian, 44 % American even though the ages covered were predominantly more Canadian players at youth levels, and then even looking at profiles of Canadian players, it's a lot of guys that played NCAA Hockey. It's not a developmental league. This will be even more the case with a bunch of CHL players joining the NCAA ranks.

For most of them yes. There are some outside of the Ivy's where grades can be a sticking point such as Michigan. I'm sure there are others too but as you said, the vast majority recognize what the players are there for.

First American born Prep skater to venture North to the Q

Not a high end elite talent, but the type of player who would have most likely gone to the USHL (drafted by Cedar Rapids last spring) next season....scouting report by NZ

Jude Herron, F, Maine

Having suited up for South Kent School 15U in 2023-24, Herron had 53 points in 45 games.

Given a star rating of 3.5, Herron is lauded for his strong shot by NZ:

“Jude was one of the most consistent 2008 players in this Select Camp field. He may not be the quickest skater but he absolutely had the strongest shot of any player we saw on the weekend. He has a thick frame that allows him to create the maximum amount of torque when he fires a wrist shot on net. He has a great release and not only can he get it on net quickly but it’s off his blade in an instant and really difficult for goaltenders to get a read on.”

Getting the top Canadian schools for hockey into the NCAA would be interesting - definitely some guys that will go over that would rather stay closer to home.
Would make it less of a Canadian vs. American thing too which would be nice. At present many people pick a side on NCAA vs CHL based on their nationality.

All in all, I think it helps kids the most. They have so many more options to develop.
One thing's for sure, there are going to be some lower-end NCAA commits who are shaking in their boots because suddenly there's a boatload more talent available. The part that we haven't talked about much is all of those ex-CHLers playing in Canadian university hockey. I expect that a fair number of CIS guys will be moving to NCAA for next season.

Yeah, lot of things at play. Does this mean guys like Celebrini and Fantilli play OHL and WHL and then go to college? Do they play for those WHL and OHL teams and then not want to leave their teammates?

Are NIL deals going to come into play and try and get the top CHL kids to go to the NCAA when they're eligible? I've seen articles about NIL stuff in NCAA hockey but its not really a thing right now like it is for basketball and football. Maybe you start to see it?

I think the grades stuff is largely overrated. Athletes have, for the most part, always had different criteria to get accepted and after they're accepted tutors do all their shit anyway, if they want them to.

My hope is that out of all this, maybe we see 1-2 guys per year that would have been USports and out based on where they were at 20 go CHL- NCAA, take some developmental strides over 2-4 years and increase the number of late blooming "free wallets" we see.

At present, NIL isn't available to non-US students so it's not a factor for Canadians. But if a prominent US kid can get a decent NIL deal, that definitely might alter how he approaches things. I don't know the financials regarding how much a top hockey player might be able to get from NIL.

CHL will definitely pull plenty of talent away from USHL/BCHL/Junior A. Superior competition will be a draw, and the scholarship funds will entice guys who are questionable in terms of their pro/NCAA hockey potential. Some of the elite prospects with late-in-the-year birthdays will still move to the NCAA for their draft season for the stronger level of competition.

The depth and calibre of NCAA talent is going to improve significantly. There is going to be serious competition for NCAA spots, especially in the short term with so many ex-CHLers available immediately who will be good enough. I bet that there will be some US kids who will come to CHL, play out their junior eligibility, and then take their CHL scholarships and go to school and play hockey at a Canadian university while still hoping to get recruited by the NCAA.

I feel badly for the lower-tier NCAA recruits approaching the end of their junior eligibility who went the USHL/BCHL/Junior A route to maintain their eligibility, got NCAA commitments, and are going to get displaced by CHLers who have at least a decent alternative through the CHL scholarship programs. But things change and it's never going to work in everyone's favour.

Yeah, someone like Edey got screwed out of a shit ton of money in NCAA hoops because of that, how long does that stand? I'm honestly most curious about CHL ---> NCAA path for the elite kids and if they'll leave the CHL for the NCAA when they get old enough. That would be the biggest change in the entire thing.

The bolded you said is also so true, as a lot of the conversation around NCAA for their draft year has to do with their birthdays. Adam Fantilli said that it drove a lot of his decisions.

There's no doubt that some of the better CHLers will move to NCAA, especially until the CHL allows 18YO/19YO signed NHL draftees to play in the AHL which I think will happen within three years.

D3 hockey is still a great product. The top 15 D3 teams match up evenly, or are better than, the bottom half of D1.

It's still a fair bit below in terms of overall calibre. And while they do their best with athletes in terms of financial aid, it's still not the same as getting a full-ride scholarship. I guess the good news is that the number of scholarships for Div 1 hockey is probably going to rise next season to 26 from 18 which is good timing given the situation.

you would think NCAA
Glad to see this. The one thing that makes optimistic about this rule change is that it will help bring about greater parity in college hockey. Mangone is a player with a motor that never stops.
Have you heard anything new on kids bolting to CHL from USHL- BCHL . i’m hearing their is massive recruiting push on lot of kids to head there .
