GDT: CHL — August 24

How teams do in CHL-games doesn't decide how good the leagues are.

These games aren't just a great way to compare these leagues but also the only way. What better way to compare the leagues than seeing them play up against each other in a competitive league where every team gives its fullest.

I might aswell say "How teams do in NHL-games doesn't decide how good the teams are." Makes zero sence.

You really think Bern gave its best? Cause I don't. There's no way they lose to a Czech team who's not even good in the Extraliga. Let's face it, they don't give a crap about this Champions League. On the other hand, I can tell you that here, in Geneva, we'll win this thing and players are pumped as hell. :yo:

They were just caught off guard. They won against Tappara and they sure as hell gave their fullest. Sure I knew some fans would claim the teams not taking this seriously, but the teams and organisations have stated that they take this very seriously, so hmmm...Who to listen, a handfull of fans or the players themselves...?

Hockey games in August can only be so competitive. From what I've seen so far, the teams are playing at anywhere from 60-90% of their capacity. Some teams are close to full game shape, some teams aren't. Some teams have kept their roster intact, some teams haven't. That makes a world of difference at this stage.

CHL games mid-season and especially the playoffs will be a decent indicator. CHL games in August is like any other exhibition, only a tad more meaningful.

It doesn't matter if the teams are out of shape or not, this is still the only way to rank the leagues and you just cant argue with that. Ranking by comparing the rosters are for the weak minded.

does last years ET count? 4 of the 6 final teams were swedish and thats without SAIK, which was by far the best team in SHL

I'll start making a judgement once the group stages are over

Yes, it counts for how the things were last season. JYP won. And yes the group stage is the first very good indicator.

Bern surely didn't give its best, but Trinec is one of the best and richest club in Extraliga last years.

Right, but SHL is considered the 3rd best league because all of the teams in there are considered good. Which ET showed last year with most of the teams in the finals being swedish

and I agree that group stages matter, which is obvious. I meant it is a little too early to say anything. Wait until all 6 games are played and see which teams go through and then start making a judgement. Anything can still happen, no one is anywhere near 100% sure to go through atm

Even though i don't really like Třinec, it's probably the most offensively gifted team in the Extraliga and i don't really see, why would it be so shocking for them to beat a NLA team, which didn't even make the Play-Offs last season ...

SHL is considered the third best league in Sweden young yedi, Sweden. Like Liiga is considered third best (often times even the second best...) in Finland. And apparently NLA in Switzerland.

But lets see, we are about to get answers to ALL of our questions regarding this subject soon enough.

In the future they should consider waiting a few months into the season before they start this, if possible. Right now it's a preseason training tournament.

Right now it is the best and only way to evaluate these leagues and teams.

A couple of weeks would suffice I think. It's just a little bit early, if it starts around the same time as the leagues it will be fine.

You'd be surprised....there are lots of neggy betties here in sweden. Pissed about their favourite players leaving the league. Some even say DEL (!) has surpassed us. Which is BS

I agree, this tournament is a good indicator to see where everyone stands

If you are so passionate about evaluating the leagues you should watch the teams in their respective leagues with their full rosters. It's not rocket science evaluating the quality of play.

We have those too, right now I'd say things are pretty even steven around Europe' top leagues. And it's not a small difference that counts in the CHL either. If we take the swedish and finnish teams for example, say, there are five finnish teams that go to the next round and only three swedish, BUT the eight swedish teams have gathered only 5-10 pts less than the eight finnish teams combined. No conclusions can really be drawn here. On the other hand, if seven swedish teams proceed to the next round and only one or two finnish teams while the swedish teams gather more than 20 pts more than their finnish counter parts, then it is certainly fair to say that the SHL is ways ahead of the finnish Liiga.

It's a general consensus that people want to know how they rank against others. That method you gave is only good for measuring the entertainment value. I like the game played in Finland faster and better than in the KHL, yet the KHL teams would win more often than not against Liiga teams, therefore making it the better league.

I root for Bern, technically one of the wealthiest teams in NLA.

They said that they would take this European tournament seriously

Yet they had simply no game so far this season !! You cannot say you take a tournament seriously when you go to it after the summer rest without games in your skates ! specially for a team that had huge roster changes. The result is a serious 0-7 !

I deeply regret that. I would really love to see a serious European tournament taking place ... the same than in soccer.

What if Bern will suck in NLA as well? Why all the fuss about one team?

A team like Skellefteå isnt even near as they were last season. Plenty of players have left and they seriously dominated SHL for two years straight. Would have been fun seeing the same team in this tournument to really se how awesome they were even compare to the rest of Europe, because they would **** anything, for real...

Skellefteå head coach stated in SVT that they don't care about results in these games, they care about performance. I don't know about you but to me that sounds very 'preseason'.

No, because then you have league-games.

The majority in Switzerland doesn't claim NLA to be the #3 league worldwide. We know about the strength in the north. But tbh the gap isn't that big anymore, we saw ZSC doing well against Färjestad who were playing the SHL's final round.

Bern had one horrible match and now they suck? Anyone who watched the Tappara match knows that they were far from being horrible.
