Hawks getting an "F" from Athletic or whatever just feels goofy. They essentially traded Hall and a retention spot I doubt they'd fill otherwise for a high 3rd. Give them like a C- or something if you think they didn't maximize value or whatever but an "F" as though they just dumped a franchise cornerstone for salary cap relief is just being nonsensical.
Agreed, people are fixated on the round. Saying they could have got a 3rd for Hall with 50% retention. Claiming they retain more but still only got a 3rd.
If they did it that way the pick is likely between 90 and 96. Now it going to be 65 to 68. An appreciable jump, especially in a weaker draft.
And the bump only cost some Wirtz dollars.

Also I cannot imagine paying this guy 14 million. He’s not that type of player, he’s a very good player, he’s not worth that much.

No need to start the internal cap of this team at a number so high and for an outsider. Leafs did the same exact thing.
and the leafs were much closer to winning

There are examples of teams being paid a pick to retain on players at the TD. It's typically a 4th or 5th round pick. Would people prefer we get a late 3rd and a 5th in this deal? Or our own 3rd back? Answer is pretty clear to me.
you could answer this question with historical hit rates on the picks, its probably close to indifferent but someone did mention the strategical value of having your own 3rd for OS possibility, the trade just probably doesn't matter much other than its eating up a retainment spot until the end of year so they cant retain on anyone else if they plan to with Jones

I don't why some of y'all are complaining, Hall is pretty much cooked at this point and isn't worth a 2nd or late 1st. This is a meh trade from a Hawks perspective. I'm also an Avs fan and I pretty much pissed at the return for a player like Rant. Not a fan of Necas at all.

Yeah, I'd love to add an elite player like that to play with Bedard... but Rantanen just isn't a timeline fit, nor is he worth $14M.

The move that makes the most sense to me is going after Pettersson. Fits the timeline, already locked up under $10M, and would be dynamic as hell with Bedard. Hawks have the assets to pull off a trade.

i believe that the retention on rantanen is now the current highest single dollar value salary retention in the league.

Depends on how you phrase it. Chicago is retaining $1.26M in real dollars for Rantanen.

- San Jose is retaining $1.43M on Eriksson this season and $3.6M total through 2027.
- San Jose is retaining $1.75M on Hertl this season and $8M total through 2030.

Mouser lays out the money. Obviously not all retention is the same.

Wouldn't matter, any offer sheet this summer is after the draft and uses 2026 picks.

Honestly, what he’s able to accomplish without MacKinnon these next 4-5 months will dictate a lot for how he’s perceived on the open market imo

Why is this board so out of touch with reality? People on X get it but here it’s all roses and butterflies, Davidson does nothing wrong and any criticism of him is frowned upon, the warriors come out in full force to stick up for him.

Good riddance to Hall. Pick #65 for him is fine with me, all it costs is Wirtz's money. We get a pick in the 60's for a completely irrelevant player no longer being on our team and blocking a spot for a kid that's hopefully a part of the future.

Hard pass on Rantanen, for $13+million do any of you really think he's going to be a 90+ point player for any significant portion of that deal? Especially 3-5 years from now when he's in his mid-30's and we're hopefully chasing Cups. No thank you. Draft this Misa kid and hope for the best instead.

People aren't going to like Bedard's next contract more likely than not but I'd bet we see a transition in how these NHLers get paid where their RFA deals are really their "mega" contract. Then when they re-up in their late 20's early 30's they're taking more reasonable deals. We learned with our own dynasty players that it makes absolutely zero sense to pay an inflated rate for a player's worst years. And again if we're going to fork that sort of money over for someone entering their 30's it's Kaprizov or bust for me, personally.

Matthews might be the blue print for what guys start to do, not the McDavid route, but suppose it depends on the player and their personality/preferences

Can't believe the number of folks worried about Wirtzbucks or the differences between a pick in the 55 and 65 range.

At the end of the day, the Hawks only used 1 retention spot, and got Hall off the roster making space for a young player. That's a win IMO.

People on this site think they have a better understanding of trade value when the market is extremely dynamic and they get their panties in a twist over marginal differences.
