That was my point. It would be absolutely crazy to ship out Rantanen and then go after Jones
Considering Jones’ roots in Denver and his NMC, the Avs would likely only consider this if Jones wanted to come here and Chicago was willing to eat salary to trade him.

I’m not sure how there’s any link or relevancy to paying Rantanen 12-14M dollars vs trying to get a 2nd pairing RD at 7ish M.

The entire point of trading Rantanen was to create more cap to upgrade other positions and create more depth and less top heavy.

Jones would legitimately give the Avs one of the best top 4 D in the league.
Again though, at the correct price point. If Chicago doesn’t want to est cap, or Jones doesn’t even want to be moved, this is all a moot argument

Taking Woods as part of a package for Jones essentially works the same as retention.

For those saying Jones has no value that is just a lazy take and as others have mentioned with significant increases to the cap over the next few years his contract will not be as difficult to work into a roster. He would be a solid 2/3 for most teams.
I don't get why Chicago would have to take Wood AND retain--it's basically 50% retention if they retained ~$2 mil AND took on Wood, not to mention he clogs up the bottom six which the Hawks have plenty of young players who they would rather play over the next 5 years. It's freeing up space at RD just to create the same problem with forwards.

Because the Avs don't have 7.5M in cap space, and neither does any team looking to trade for Jones. Chicago is going to have to take some sort of contract back in a deal and Woods is most easily moved. Chicago can always flip him at some point if they pleased

Taking a plug like Wood saves zero term over Jones and only what? 4 mil if retention is happening as well. Pass.

Seems like Jones vs. Middlestadt would fit under the Cap, maybe you get a guy like Donato vs. Malinski to balance the trade. And Hawks either eat half of Donato's Cap or retain $1 million-$1.5 million on Jones. And then whatever draft picks/prospects involved.

It's not going to be nothing, but if/when Jones is traded I don't think it'll be a huge return. Mainly for these 2 reasons:

1. Jones has a NMC
2. Teams that are interested/Jones would waive for would require retention

That basically puts the onus on Chicago needing to retain to make a deal work, otherwise you're just left with him. So it's going to be something like Cap dump roster player + Pick + B prospect(s), something in that range. I don't see an A asset being included.

There's been a few Avs proposals like

Ivan Ivan
Olausson
Wood
2026 1st

I think the Avs would try to get Kurashev involved too if the cap could work, or ship out Colton in another deal and add Dickinson if they saw it as an improvemnt
Why would the Avs want Kurashev? He wouldn't displace Drouin/Nichushkin/Lehkonen/Necas in the top 6 and he's not the sort of winger they typically like in the bottom 6.

Avs would have no interest in including Mittelstadt for Jones unless there's a second trade for a better 2C. Judging by the lack of 2c options on the market though that seems unlikely.

A realistic trade would be Jones ($7.5m /$2m retained) for whatever pick(s) and prospects Chicago accept, with the picks to choose from being 2025 NYR 2nd, 2025 CAR 2nd, and/or 2026 COL 1st.

Colorado have $5.599 in capspace right now so they'd need to create another ~2m in space to fit Jones. Dumping Kylington ($1.05) would help, but they'd also need to move one of Colton or Wood. Moving Colton would leave enough capspace to use on a direct replacement.

I'd rather the Blackhawks receive Colton than Wood. They need players who can win faceoffs. Nearly every player on their roster is listed as a center, but they need to do what they can to get more offensive zone time before they can even act like their young guys are developing anything other than puck chasing skills.

Colton has a full NTC this season
